WALTHAM, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team has won two matches in a row, securing a 5-1 victory over Bentley University on Wednesday in Northeast-10 Conference play.
With just its second win over the Falcons across the last 20 matches versus its NE10 rival, Saint Anselm improves to 3-4 overall on the season and to 2-1 versus conference opponents. Bentley remains without a win in four chances this year.
Saint Anselm picked up the quick doubles point, earning a convincing 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles before logging a 6-2 result at No. 3 doubles. The Hawks narrowly swept all three doubles matches as Bentley needed to fight for a 6-4 win at No. 2.
Freshman Irene Garbo (Assemini, Sardinia, Italy) and sophomore Olivia Parzick (Bow, N.H.) were winners at No. 1 before sophomore Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico) partnered to record the No. 3 doubles decision.
The Hawks won in order at No. 1 and No. 2 singles with Garbo packing up with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. She was followed by senior Anastasia Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine), whose 6-2, 6-3 win put Saint Anselm ahead by a 3-0 score in the match.
A hard-fought loss at No. 3 singles preceded Heredia Osante's quickly-earned 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, creating a 4-1 score for Saint Anselm and clinching the match. Freshman Matilda Briegel (Tutzing, Bavaria, Germany) battled her way to a third-set win, taking the best-of-10 tiebreak by an 11-9 score to create the final score.
Sophomore Julia Svor (Lewiston, Maine) was up after the first set, 7-6 (2), before the match was called.
Garbo and Heredia Osante sport matching 5-2 records in singles play while Abigail Svor holds a 5-1 record in doubles competition, winning her last five matches. Heredia Osante has also won five of her six doubles matches to date for the Hawks.
The Hawks welcome Franklin Pierce to the Hilltop on Friday, Sept. 30 at 3:30 p.m. for a match that has been rescheduled twice before.
