MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team fell to the defending Northeast-10 Conference champions, Franklin Pierce University, by a 4-3 score on Friday.
The Hawks move to 3-5 on the season and 2-2 in conference matches while the Ravens remain unbeaten at 3-0 overall and 2-0 against league opponents.
In doubles action, sophomore Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico) earned the Hawks only doubles decision at the No. 3 position, as the visiting Ravens were victorious at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, taking a 1-0 lead in the match. With the win, Abigail Svor and Heredia Osante improved their record to 6-1 during the fall campaign as doubles partners.
Liria Loria's straight-set win over senior Anastasia Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine) at No. 2 singles gave Franklin Pierce a 2-0 lead, but Heredia Osante's 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 singles soon after put the Hawks on the scoreboard. Sophomore Olivia Parzick (Bow, N.H.) came up on the short end of a 6-2, 6-2 defeat at No. 3 singles to Ana Platisa, which gave the Ravens a 3-1 edge.
Freshman Irene Garbo (Assemini, Sardinia, Italy) posted a magnificent performance at No. 1 singles, with a 6-3, 6-1 win, just before sophomore Julia Svor (Lewiston, Maine) earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 singles position. The wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles tied the overall dual match score at three.
In the day's final match, freshman Matilda Briegel (Tutzing, Bavaria, Germany) battled to the end with Franklin Pierce's Zoe Asterio Correa, in a 6-3, 6-2 contest that secured the overall victory for the Ravens, 4-3.
Saint Anselm will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 2 from Syracuse, N.Y. as the Hawks will battle Le Moyne College. The match is set for a high noon start.
