Men's soccer blanks Roberts Wesleyan, 2-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team grabbed a 2-0 non-conference victory over Roberts Wesleyan College from Melucci Field on Wednesday.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-0-0 on the season while the Redhawks fall to 2-3-0 in 2022. Saint Anselm returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 10 when they host New Haven at 12 p.m. in both teams' Northeast-10 Conference opener.

Saint Anselm has posted a win in each of their first three matches for the second time in three full seasons of competition, last reaching the 3-0-0 mark in the 2019 season.

The Hawks had a great scoring chance in the fourth minute as senior Kyle White (Danvers, Mass.) fired a shot that beat Redhawks goalkeeper Jared Gibbons. However, Benjamin Lazcano Barros chested the ball off the goal line to clear the Hawks scoring chance.

However, White would get his first goal of the season in the 11th minute when he converted on a penalty kick, beating Gibbons in the upper left corner of the goal to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Later in the 29th minute, the Redhawks played the ball back to Gibbons who was pressured by Elliot inside the Roberts Wesleyan 18-yard box. Elliot forced the turnover and chipped the ball into the back of the goal to double the Hawks lead.

The match, which was already physical, upped the pace and physicality as five yellow cards were issued in the second half, four to the Redhawks and one to the Hawks.

Luis Cataldi Milan registered the best shot on goal by Roberts Wesleyan in the 73rd minute as he chipped a bending shot on senior Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.). The senior goalkeeper made a diving stop to prevent any further chances and keep the 2-0 advantage for the Hawks.

Saint Anselm had a pair of penalty kicks in the 83rd minute. Senior Jackson Bukunt (Upton, Mass.) sent the first shot attempt off the right post and then following a yellow card issued to Roberts Wesleyan, Bukunt fired another PK attempt which Gibbons stopped, diving to his right.

Roberts Wesleyan attempted 12 shots in the second half with five of them on goal compared to nine and six for Saint Anselm.

Underhill posted his first clean sheet of the season with six saves, five of which came in the second half. Gibbons suffered his third loss of 2022 and made seven saves in the contest.
