Men's soccer nets 1-0 win over New Haven in NE10 opener

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Andrew Kubinski (Norton, Mass.) netted his first collegiate goal in the 67th minute to give the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team a 1-0 win over the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday.

With the win, the Hawks improve to 4-0-0 on the season and move to 1-0-0 in conference games while the Chargers fall to 0-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 on NE10 matches. Saint Anselm is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 when they head to cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire University for a 7 p.m. opening kickoff.

The men's soccer program has posted a win in each of its first four matches for the second time in three full seasons of play, last accomplishing the feat in the 2019 season.

The best chance for the Chargers came in the 42nd minute when Guillem Barnils forced a turnover just outside the 18-yard box. He fired a shot that went wide of the goal.

The Hawks quickly responded with a chance of their own on the ensuing goal kick as senior Kyle White (Danvers, Mass.) found the head of sophomore Jonas Walter (Marburg, Germany). Walter headed the ball through the Chargers backline for junior Josue Assantha (Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo). Assantha's shot attempt would be stopped by Themis Kastoris to send the teams to the half with no score.

The teams again traded scoring chances to open the second half as Barnils forced senior goalkeeper Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) to make a diving save to keep the match scoreless. The Hawks, less than a minute later, had a pair of shots in the 18-yard box that were blocked.

The Hawks would net the only goal of the match in the 67th minute as senior Jonathan Alves (Peabody, Mass.) sent a throw-in to classmate Jackson Bukunt (Upton, Mass.) who quickly chipped a pass to a streaking Kubinski. The sophomore would fire a left-footed shot into the bottom right of the net for the first of his collegiate career.

The teams upped the pace and physicality in the remaining time but neither side managed a strong scoring chance leading to the Hawks 1-0 win.

Underhill posted his second consecutive clean sheet in the Hawks goal. He turned aside six Chargers shots on goal while Kastoris stopped four of five shots on target in the goal for New Haven.
