HOOKSETT, N.H. – For the first time since 2009, Saint Anselm College picked up a victory over perennial men's soccer power Southern New Hampshire University, doing so on Wednesday by a 1-0 margin.
Saint Anselm moves to 5-0 on the season with the road result – the Hawks last owned an unblemished record through its first five games in 2001. Southern New Hampshire (3-2) saw its unbeaten streak of 11 games over the Hawks snapped.
Off a throw-in by senior Jonathan Alves (Peabody, Mass.), the ball found its way behind the Penmen defensive line in the game's 77th minute. Junior Zach Verow (Bedford, N.H.) was able to get a shot off, striking the left post before a crashing Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) pounded the ball past the sprawling Southern New Hampshire netminder.
Senior Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) stood tall in goal for Saint Anselm, making saves on all five shots against. He has not allowed a goal against since Sept. 5 against Saint Michael's, a span of 290:12. Underhill was also aided by a stout Hawks defense, limiting the Penmen to few quality scoring chances inside the box.
Preston Neal made three saves on four shots for SNHU. Luca Shubitidze fired four of his team's 12 shots, finding the net once.
Saint Anselm returns to action Saturday, Sept. 17, taking on No. 15-ranked Southern Connecticut State on the road at 2 p.m.
