MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Bentley University in a rematch of last season's Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinal on Tuesday.
With the tie, the Hawks move to 6-3-1 on the season with a 2-3-1 mark in NE10 games while the Falcons go to 3-3-3 overall and 2-3-1 in league games. Saint Anselm heads to No. 8 nationally, the College of Saint Rose, on Saturday, Oct. 1. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Albany, N.Y.
"The group showed tremendous resolve in the second half as our energy and commitment got us back into the game and allowed us to take a point today." said head coach
Joel Bancroft. " We found something in that final 45 minutes and we will need to have the same approach and resolve the rest of the way."
Junior
Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season in the contest with sophomore
Sydney Wnek (Haverhill, Mass.) registering the first point and assist of her season.
Freshman
Emma Hudson (Kingston, Mass.) turned aside a career-high 11 saves in the contest including all five in the second half. Her counterpart,
Claire Ewen made five saves in the match, all of which came in the final 45 minutes.
Following a great scoring chance on a long shot by Gotobed, Bentley struck first as
Sydney O'Connor fired a shot off a long service from
Brooke Jones, who was just inside the midfield circle. O'Connor's 15th minute tally gave the Falcons a 1-0 edge.
Saint Anselm continued to mount pressure with two more chances from Gotobed just going wide of the goal frame in the 17th and 18th minutes.
In the 28th minute, Jones sent a long shot on goal that forced Hudson to make a fingertip save to keep the score at 1-0 for Bentley.
Through the opening 45 minutes, Bentley held a 7-0 edge in shots on goal but just an 8-6 advantage in total shots.
Junior
Tara McCleary (Quincy, Mass.) had a great chance to knot the match at one as she collected a rebound from a blocked shot and sent a laser at Ewen in the opening minutes of the second half. However, Ewen made the stop to preserve the Falcons lead.
Gotobed would net the equalizer in the 67th minute as she quickly fired a shot off a feed from Wnek. Gotobed sent her left footed shot into the upper left of the goal to tie the match.
Wnek had the best chance to find the net in the remaining time as she collected a through ball from sophomore
Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) inside the Falcons 18-yard box. Wnek sent her one-time shot just over the crossbar in the 83rd minute.
Bentley held a 19-18 advantage in shots in the match and had a 12-6 margin in shots on goal. The Falcons garnered five corner kicks to three for the Hawks.
