WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The regionally-ranked Saint Anselm College women's soccer team suffered a 3-2 defeat to the University of New Haven on Saturday.
The Hawks fall to 6-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play while the Chargers improve to 4-4-2 on the season and 2-3-0 in league matches. Saint Anselm hosts Bentley University on Tuesday, Sept. 27 in a rematch of last season's NE10 Quarterfinal match, which went the Hawks way by a 1-0 score.
Sophomore
Erin Rutherford (Ashburnham, Mass.) registered three points in the match, netting one goal and adding one assist. Sophomore
Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) added a goal for the Hawks while junior
Tara McCleary (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore
Allison Silverstein (Concord, N.H.) recorded one assist apiece.
Freshman
Emma Hudson (Kingston, Mass.) made three saves on six shots on goal in the losing effort for Saint Anselm.
Amanda McQuillan stopped three of five shots on target for the Chargers.
The Chargers netted a pair of goals just 42 seconds apart starting in the 74th minute as
Vickie Fleming won a foot race to a loose ball that went over the Hawks backline. Fleming fired a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the goal to knot the match at two.
Madison Blonde would give the Chargers a 3-2 lead in the 75th minute. Blonde collected a pass in the right corner and drove to the middle of the 18-yard box. She sent a left footed strike into the upper half of the goal.
Earlier in the match, Fleming opened the scoring in the 17th minute as she fired a left-footed shot from just inside the Saint Anselm 18-yard box which gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks replied with a pair of goals, one from Pecor which tied the match in the 37th minute before Rutherford found the back of the net in the 40th minute.
On the equalizing goal, Rutherford controlled the ball in the right corner and sent a pass to Silverstein inside the box. Silverstein redirected the play to Pecor who sent a left-footed shot into the upper right of the goal.
Rutherford would strike in the 40th minute as she lifted a shot into the upper left of the goal to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead late in the first half.
