MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team opens its 2022 season with two non-conference games in three days, starting at Caldwell University on Saturday, Sept. 3.
Following the season opener on the road, the Hawks battle a familiar foe in Saint Michael's College in a non-league tilt from the friendly confines of Melucci Field on Monday, Sept. 5.

Saint Anselm needed a win in its regular season finale to qualify for the 2021 Northeast-10 Conference postseason. However, the team's lone tie of the campaign kept them out of contention, pushing them to a 6-9-1 overall record and a 3-8-1 mark in league matches. The Hawks will meet Roberts Wesleyan College on Wednesday, Sept. 7 before hosting the University of New Haven on Saturday, Sept. 10 in the conference opener for both team.
Caldwell is off to a 0-3-0 start falling to Le Moyne, Saint Rose, and Bloomsburg. The Cougars host the Hawks in their final non-conference tune up before heading to Wilmington (Del.) to open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
Saint Michael's is also off to a 0-3-0 start to its 2022 campaign. The Purple Knights fell to Saint Thomas Aquinas, Daemen (N.Y.), and Roberts Wesleyan. Saint Michael's will be making the trip to the Hilltop in their final match before NE10 play opens on Saturday, Sept. 10 with the Purple Knights heading to Assumption.
HAWKS NOTES
- Saint Anselm returns 25 student-athletes from last season's roster including the top point scorers in graduate student Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) and junior Josue Assantha (Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo).
- In 2021, Elliot and Assantha netted five goals each which were tied for a team-high. Elliot added a team-high five assists for 15 points while Assantha had two helpers and 12 points.
- The Hawks roster in 2022 features 38 student-athletes with 13 newcomers to the program. Saint Anselm brought in eight first-year student-athletes and five transfers.
- Senior goalkeeper Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) returns as a co-captain, joining Elliot as the team's leadership group. Underhill started and played in all 16 matches for Saint Anselm last season. He posted a 1.35 goals-against average and a 0.763 save percentage, stopping 71 shots on goal. He also pitched four shutouts for the Hawks.
- Sophomore Caden Leader (Durham, N.H.) and seniors Jackson Bukunt (Upton, Mass.), Taylor Silverstein (Concord, N.H.), Michael Fortin (Goffstown, N.H.), Jonathan Alves (Peabody, Mass.), and Kevin Jordan (Danvers, Mass.) all return for Saint Anselm as well. The six student-athletes were key contributors across the pitch for the Hawks in 2021.
- Head coach Bruno Victal enters his seventh season at the helm of the men's soccer program in 2022. Saint Anselm has recorded at least six wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
- Saint Anselm was projected to finish in ninth in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll this season.
SCOUTING CALDWELL
- The Cougars have been outscored by their opponents by a 5-2 margin, falling by 1-0 scores to Le Moyne and Bloomsburg and dropping a 3-2 decision to Saint Rose.
- Alex Spencer and Andre Vieira are credited with one goal each for Caldwell, with both goals going down as unassisted markers.
- Chris Ferri leads the team with three shots on goal while Spencer and Vieira have two shots on target each.
- Jalen Folsom and Dylan Valencia have split time in the goal for the Cougars. Folsom has started two matches and owns a 1.00 goals-against average and a 0.867 save percentage with a 0-2-0 record. Valencia is 0-1-0 with a 3.00 goals-against average and a 0.625 save percentage.
- Caldwell was selected to finish 13th in the CACC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S
- Isaiah McCaskill has the lone goal for the Purple Knights this season. He has three shots with one on target. McCaskill was tied for eighth in the NE10 last season with eight goals.
- Joel Marquardt leads the Saint Michael's offense with five shots, three of which have been on goal. Brock Martindale has added four shots with two of them on frame.
- Liam Barrett has started two games in goal for the Purple Knights. He has a 4.89 goals-against average and a 0.529 save percentage while Aidan McHugh has drawn one start and owns a 3.67 goals-against and a 0.545 save percentage.
- Saint Michael's was selected to finish 12th in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll.
ALL-TIME vs. CALDWELL, SAINT MICHAEL'S
- This will be the fifth meeting between the Hawks and Cougars with each side collecting two wins. The programs have not met since the 2008 season
- The Hawks and Purple Knights will battle for the 59th time on Monday. Saint Anselm enjoys a 36-15-7 record against Saint Michael's.
- Since the 2017 season, the Hawks and Purple Knights have met twice in each full season of competition with one match coming out of conference and one in-conference. Last season, the Purple Knights took both meetings in a pair of one-goal contests.
