RINDGE, N.H. – The regionally-ranked Saint Anselm College women's soccer team dropped its Northeast-10 Conference match to in-state foe, Franklin Pierce University, 2-0.
The Hawks fall to 4-2-0 on the season with a 0-2-0 mark in NE10 matches while the regionally-ranked Ravens improve to 4-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in league contests. Saint Anselm will host Le Moyne College on Saturday, Sept. 17 from the friendly confines of Melucci Field.
The Ravens jumped on the attack early as
Jasmin Perez-Acosta fired a shot that was blocked and then had another attempt that was turned aside by freshman
Emma Hudson (Kingston, Mass.).
Aino Martikainen added another shot on Hudson, all within the opening six minutes.
Saint Anselm responded with its first scoring chance of the match as junior
Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.) fired a left-footed shot from just outside the box on goal in the 10th minute. However, the attempt was right at the Ravens goalkeeper.
The defensive battle in the first half saw 10 shots between the sides with just four them on goal.
Franklin Pierce posted another flurry of shots in the opening minutes of the second half as
Elenora Franco and
Makenzie Shean put shots on Hudson, but the freshman stopped both shot attempts.
The Ravens nearly netted the opening goal of the match in the 64th minute as Martikainen headed a shot on a corner kick play off the crossbar. The Hawks, on their ensuing push, would get a strong shot on goal from freshman
Gabrielle Chisholm (Danvers, Mass.) as she collected a pass in open space and fired a right-footed shot onto the left side of the goal. However, the chance was stopped by Ravens goalkeeper
Emilie Fox.
Less than a minute later, Franklin Pierce would net the match's first goal as
Mollie Cahalane headed a cross into the back of the net, giving the hosts a 1-0 edge.
The Ravens doubled their lead in the 89th minute on a goal by Perez-Acosta. Perez-Acosta found the back of the goal on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box to make the score 2-0.
Sophomore
Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) would put a shot on fox in the final minute of the second half but there was not enough time left in the match for the Hawks to mount the comeback.
Hudson stopped six of eight shots on goal for the Hawks while
Gabby Calidonio and Fox combined for a five-save shutout in the win.
