MANCHESTER, N.H. – The regionally-ranked Saint Anselm College women's soccer team picked up its first Northeast-10 Conference win on Saturday, defeating Le Moyne College, 3-1.
The Hawks improve to 5-2 on the season with a 1-2 record in NE10 matches while the Dolphins fall to 2-3-1 overall and 0-3 in league play. Saint Anselm will travel to New Haven on Saturday, Sept. 24 for their next conference match.
The Hawks had a fast start to the game as sophomore
Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) played junior
Tara McCleary (Quincy, Mass.) through on goal in the third minute. The goalkeeper was able to get a piece of McCleary's shot, but it ultimately rolled into the back of the net.
Minutes later, Saint Anselm earned a free kick that was crossed in by senior
Kathryn White (Georgetown, Mass) and headed home by
Addie Birkett (East Greenwich, R.I.) for the latter's first collegiate goal.
Later in the half, Pecor fired in a pass to junior
Olivia Gotobed (North Andover Mass.) that was hit well but saved by the goalkeeper.
Late in the second half, sophomore
Erin Rutherford (Ashburnham, Mass.) attacked along the wing and whipped a pass across goal to sophomore
Faith Lee (North Andover, Mass.), who was able to tap in the third goal for the Hawks.
Three minutes later, Saint Anselm conceded a penalty that put Le Moyne's
Hildur Unnarsdóttir on the spot. Her penalty attempt was saved by the goalkeeper but her second attempt off the rebound was sent home for the only Dolphins goal of the game.
Freshman
Emma Hudson (Kingston Mass.) saved four of six shots on goal for Saint Anselm while
Allison Moreau saved seven of 10 shots on target for Le Moyne in the loss.
