Baseball ties single season home run record in loss to Stonehill

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team tied a program record for home runs in a single season at 45 but the Hawks fell to Stonehill College on Friday by an 8-2 score.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 18-21 on the season and 11-10 in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play. The Skyhawks improve to 16-24 overall and 5-12 in league contests. The teams are set for a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 30 from Gill Stadium in Manchester, N.H. The twinbill is scheduled for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. first pitches.

Graduate student Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) led the Hawks offense with three hits in four at-bats, extending his hitting streak to nine games. Junior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) and sophomore Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) recorded one hit each. Pezzolla and Borrelli collected one run batted in each.

Freshman Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) suffered the loss after allowing nine hits in six innings of work. The freshman gave up four runs while walking three and striking out five. Senior Andy Grygorcewicz (Northampton, Mass.) came on in relief with two innings of work before freshman Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) closed the contest on the mound for Saint Anselm.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Borrelli led off the inning by driving a 1-0 pitch to right field for his seventh home run and the team's 45th of the season, tying the 2001 squad for the program record in single season home runs.

Earlier in the game, the Skyhawks opened the first inning with four consecutive hits, three of which were doubles. Conor Kiely led off with a two-bagger before scoring on a double by Noah Lucier. Blaine Lidsky followed a Matt Farragher single with a double of his own to score Lucier. However, Betty would get a double play ball and a line out to limit the damage as the visitors held a 2-0 lead through the top of the first inning.

Clough and Pezzolla netted back-to-back to singles in the home half of the first but an inning-ending double play got Stonehill out of early trouble unscathed.

Farragher added to the Skyhawks lead with a solo home run in the top of the third, extending the lead to 3-0.

Kiely led off the top of the fifth with a double before reaching third on a ground out to shortstop. Senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) took away a sure run with a diving play up the middle to get Lucier out at first. Trey Ciulla Hall singled to right center field to score Kiely and give the Skyhawks a 4-0 lead.

Stonehill loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning on a pair of one-out singles and a walk but Betty got a strikeout and a ground out to get out of the jam.

A two-out bases loaded double plated two more runs for the Skyhawks and a third was on the way home but a strong relay consisting of senior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.), Collins, and Borrelli got the runner out at the plate with Stonehill leading 6-0.

Pezzolla singled in the bottom of the seventh inning which was the Hawks first base runner since senior Jack Dunklee (Wilbraham, Mass.) walked in the bottom of the third inning. The graduate student got into scoring position with a stolen base but he was stranded on second.

The Skyhawks netted another run in their half of the eighth as Lidsky recorded a sacrifice fly to score Lucier from third and push the advantage to 7-0.

Doran led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk before Dunklee reached on a fielding error. After a strikeout and a foul out, Pezzolla singled to left field which scored Doran from second to get the Hawks on the board.

Stonehill added another run in the top of the ninth as Brandon Taylor was hit by a pitch and then reached third on a throwing error. The Hawks defense turned a double play on a ball put in play by Chris Roberti but Taylor would cross the plate on the play to regain the 8-1 edge.
