Baseball splits twinbill against Stonehill

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team split its Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with Stonehill College, posting a game one win by a 5-0 score before falling in game two, 4-2.

The Hawks move to 19-22 on the season and 12-11 in NE10 play while the Skyhawks go to 17-25 overall and 6-13 in conference contests. The teams conclude their four-game series on Sunday, May 1. Saint Anselm will honor its senior class with a pregame Senior Day celebration prior to the 12 p.m. opening pitch at Sullivan Park.

Saint Anselm's 12 conference wins and 19 wins on the season are both the most since the 2012 season.

Senior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) and junior Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.) led Saint Anselm with two hits each on the day. Maurice, Doran, and junior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) drove in one run each across the doubleheader.

Sophomore Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.) posted his fifth win of the season in game one. Michel allowed just five hits in six innings of work before junior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) capped the shutout with a hitless inning of work.

Junior Harry MacKinlay (Norwell, Mass.) suffered the loss in game two, going 5.2 innings. MacKinlay surrendered three runs on seven hits before senior David Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) conceded one unearned run in 1.1 innings of relief.

GAME ONE: Saint Anselm 5, Stonehill 0

The Skyhawks managed to get runners on second and third with one out following a sacrifice bunt by Matt Farragher. However, Michel worked out of the early first inning trouble with a pair of strikeouts.

Stonehill got runners on the corner in the top of the second with one out but Michel worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly out.

Saint Anselm got its first base runners of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) and Doran drew back-to-back walks. Two fly outs and a foul out would strand the runners on first and second.

The Hawks would net their first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as senior Jack Dunklee (Wilbraham, Mass.) singled to lead off the inning. Collins would move Dunklee to second with a sacrifice bunt before Doran laced a double down the right field line to score Dunklee. After a hit by pitch and an intentional walk, Borrelli would single to third to score Doran. That brought senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) to the plate. He hit a dribbler towards third but it was cut off by the pitcher. His throw was wide of the plate which allowed all three runs to score to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.

Stonehill got a runner on base with a hit by pitch in the top of the seventh, but a pair of ground outs closed the contest, giving the Hawks their 19th win of the season.

GAME TWO: Stonehill 4, Saint Anselm 2

The Skyhawks put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning as Conor Kiely led off with a single before stealing second which allowed him to score on a double by Noah Lucier. Lucier would cross the plate on a single to right center field by Blaine Lidsky.

Saint Anselm loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but two strikeouts by Tyler Marshall left the bases loaded.

The Hawks got a run back in the bottom of the third inning as graduate student Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) reached on an error and advanced to second on the play to lead off the frame. He would get to third on a wild pitch before a RBI groundout by Maurice, pushing the score to 2-1 through three innings of play.

Saint Anselm tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth as Borrelli grounded out, advancing Pezzolla and Maurice who reached via hit by pitch and single earlier in the inning. Pezzolla would score on wild pitch which brought the score even at two. However, Maurice was stranded at third following a strikeout to close the inning.

Stonehill regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Dennis Folan notched a two-out single before Taylor Gaspar came on as a pinch runner and stole second. After a walk, Kiely doubled down the left field line to score Gaspar.

After the Hawks went three up, three down in the bottom of the sixth, the Skyhawks added an insurance run in the seventh as Lidsky reached on a fielder's choice. He would steal second and reach third on a throwing error. He would score on a sacrifice fly by Trey Ciulla Hall to extend the lead to 4-2.

Saint Anselm got the lead off runner on but a double play cleared the bases. After a hit by pitch, a foul out would seal the game for the Skyhawks, taking game two by a 4-2 score.
