Baseball grabs 9-0 win over Post in series finale

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team concluded its four-game set against Post University with a 9-0 win on Sunday.

The Hawks improve to 3-6 on the season after taking three of four in the series with the Eagles, who fall to 3-9. Saint Anselm is back in action on Saturday, Mar. 12 against Dominican (N.Y.) College, opening a four-game series from the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

Saint Anselm grinded out nine runs on 11 hits in the contest while the pitching and defense gave up seven hits but did not allow a run to cross the plate.

Sophomore Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) and freshman Ryan Scialabba (Cheshire, Conn.) recorded three hits each for the Hawks. Senior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H) and sophomore Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) launched one home run each for Saint Anselm.

Sophomore Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.) drew his first start of the season, allowing seven hits in six innings on the mound. Classmate Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) and junior Travis MacMurdo (Tewksbury, Mass.) combined to close out the final three innings on the mound, allowing just one baserunner.

Clough and graduate student Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) recorded back-to-back singles in the top of the first inning and a pair of wild pitches would score Clough. However, Pezzolla would be stranded at third as a fly out closed the inning.

Elmore led off the second inning with a walk and was doubled home by Scialabba who was later singled home by Clough, giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

Robert Olah and Evan Cornwell recorded a single and a double to get runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the second inning but Michel got a pair of swinging strikeouts and a ground out to get out of the jam.

Junior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) reached on an error to lead off the third inning and was quickly driven home on Maurice's second home run in as many days. After a pitching change, senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) walked, Scialabba and senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) singled to load the bases for junior Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.) who would drive in Pierro with a sacrifice fly which doubled the Hawks lead to 6-0 through three innings.

Saint Anselm added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning when Elmore drove his team-leading third home run over the left field wall to add to the Hawks advantage.

In the top of the eighth inning, junior Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) was hit by a pitch and was brought home on a Borrelli triple, bringing the score to 9-0.

The Hawks would force the Eagles to go three up and three down in both the eighth and ninth innings, closing the series with a 9-0 win.
