CARY, N.C. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team opened its four-game series against Dominican (N.Y.) College with a 15-8 win on Saturday, Mar. 12.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 4-6 on the season while the Chargers fall to 2-7 on its season. The teams are set for a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 13 from the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C. with the opening pitches slated for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Graduate student
Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and freshman
Ryan Scialabba (Cheshire, Conn.) led the Hawks offense with three runs batted in each. Pezzolla went three-for-five at the plate while scoring twice. Scialabba and senior
Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) were two-for-four on the day. Maurice and senior
Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) added two runs batted in each while sophomore
Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) worked three walks and scored three runs in the contest.
Junior
Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) improved to 2-2 on the season after throwing five innings on the mound. Bedder struck out 10 batters while allowing seven runs on four hits and three walks. Senior
Andy Grygorcewicz (Northampton, Mass.) and freshman
Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) came on in relief and combined to allow one run in four innings of work.
After a three-up three-down in the top of the first inning, the Hawks would post four runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior
Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.) led off with a single and advanced to third on a single by Pezzolla before Maurice doubled home two runs to give Saint Anselm a 2-0 lead. After a pair of walks, drawn by Elmore and senior
Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.), Scialabba singled to drive in Maurice and Elmore, giving the Hawks their four-run opening inning.
The Chargers jumped on the board in the third inning as
Stefano Libio doubled, scoring
Max Chidsey who led off the inning with a walk. After an error,
Benjamin Avila singled to score Libio and
Richard Paulino followed with a double to center field, bringing in two more runs.
Ethan Sarmiento recorded a sacrifice fly before
Shane Hewlette gave the Chargers a 5-4 lead on a single, scoring Paulino.
The Hawks responded with an eight spot in the bottom of the third as Pierro and Collins reached on errors. After a Doran walk, sophomore
Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) singled to drive in Pierro. Pezzolla followed with a two-run double before junior
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) singled to score Clough. A walk by Maurice set up a bases loaded scenario for Elmore, who drew a walk bringing in another run which made the score 9-5. Pierro and Scialabba would bring in runs with a walk and a hit by pitch before Elmore scored to cap the inning on a passed ball, which gave the Hawks a 12-5 lead through three innings of play.
An error and a walk in the top of the fourth got the Chargers in business and three passed balls in the inning would score Libio and Richman, bringing the score to 12-7. Bedder would close the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Saint Anselm added three runs on the bottom of the fifth as Collins singled, driving in Elmore and Pierro who reached on an error and was hit by a pitch which paved way for a Pezzolla walk to bring home Scialabba who singled before Collins' two-run hit. The Hawks closed the fifth with a 15-7 advantage.
Tyler Richman walked to lead off the sixth inning and was brought home on a double by Paulino, marking the only run allowed by Grygorcewicz which made the score 15-8 in favor of the Hawks.
In the remainder of the contest, neither squad managed to get a runner beyond second base or get more than two runners on base in the same inning.
