Baseball takes both games of twinbill against Dominican (N.Y.)

CARY, N.C. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team captured a doubleheader sweep of Dominican (N.Y.) College on Sunday, Mar. 13 from the USA Baseball Training Complex.

Saint Anselm captured a 9-4 win in extra innings in game one while posting a 9-6 win in game two. The Hawks improve to 6-6 on the season while the Chargers fall to 2-9 overall. The teams conclude their four-game series on Monday, Mar. 14 with the opening pitch slated for 11 a.m.

Sophomore Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) led the Hawks in the opening game of the doubleheader, going three-for-five at the plate and scoring three times. Senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.), junior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.), sophomore Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.), and freshman Ryan Scialabba (Cheshire, Conn.) recorded two hits each in the extra-inning win.

Senior Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) was two-for-three in game two with two home runs and five runs batted in while Borrelli registered three hits in three at-bats scoring twice while working one walk and driving in one.

Freshman Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) and junior John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) started the contests for the Hawks on the mound. Betty went 6.1 innings on the mound, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out six. Junior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) came on in relief, going 2.2 innings and grabbed the win. Donovan posted 3.2 innings pitched in the game two start, recording the win, while sophomore Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) collected the save after going 3.1 innings in relief.

GAME ONE: SAINT ANSELM 9, DOMINICAN 4 (9 Innings)

After Dominican tied the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning, Saint Anselm put five runs on the board in the top of the ninth inning. Clough would lead off with a single before Borrelli reached on an error. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners as Elmore would single home the go ahead run. Pierro would reach on an error to load the bases for Scialabba who brought in two more runs with a single. Senior Jack Dunklee (Wilbraham, Mass.) netted a single, bringing home Scialabba and Pierro to cap off the five-run inning.

Earlier in the contest, the Hawks posted three runs in the top of the first inning after Clough, graduate student Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.), and Borrelli all reach base via single or walk which set up Maurice for a single, bringing in Clough. Pierro took advantage of the bases loaded opportunity with a two-run single, which gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

The Chargers got on the board when Alexander Reyes drove in Shane Hewlette who led off the bottom of the second inning with a walk. That pushed the score to 3-1.

Dominican would get to within one as Bobby Garbuio doubled to score Richard Paulino in the bottom of the third. However, the Hawks would reestablish their two-run lead when Clough singled and Borrelli doubled in the top of the fourth inning to put runners on second and third. Clough would score on a passed ball, giving Saint Anselm a 4-2 lead.

Down to their final three outs, the Chargers would tie the contest and force extra innings as Reyes led off with a single before a walk put two runners on base. Darian Almonte singled to score Reyes before another single from Paulino tied the score at four.

GAME TWO: SAINT ANSELM 9, DOMINICAN 6

After getting out of early trouble in the top of the first inning, the Hawks would strike for three runs on a big fly from Maurice. Clough and Borrelli walked to put runners on base for the senior who launched his third homer of the season.

Dominican would cross the plate twice in the top of the third inning. A pair of hit by pitches and a wild pitch got runners to second and third before Christian Fils-Aime registered a sacrifice fly. After another hit by pitch, Paulino reached on an error, scoring William Desapio to push the score to 3-2.

The Chargers took their first lead of the contest in the top of the fourth inning as Hewlette and Arthur Quinones were hit by a pitch and another wild pitch put runners on second and third. A ground out by Almonte brought in one run before Fils-Aime and Tyler Patterson netted RBI singles to give Dominican a 5-3 edge.

Saint Anselm quickly regained its lead in the bottom half of the inning as senior Enzo Merlonghi (Monroe, Conn.) walked before a Dunklee single. Senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) brought home Merlonghi with a single, leading to a Clough double which scored Collins and Dunklee. Borrelli added a double of his own to bring home Clough which gave Saint Anselm a 7-5 lead.

Maurice would launch his second home run of the game and the day in the bottom of the sixth after Borrelli registered a two-out double before Garbuio homered to lead off the top of the seventh inning, ultimately forcing the final score of 9-6.
