MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped both halves of its twinbill against Assumption University on Saturday from Gill Stadium, 12-6 and 4-0.
The Hawks fall to 7-12 on the season and 0-2 in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play. The Greyhounds improve to 8-7 overall and 2-0 in conference contests. The squads are set for another doubleheader from Gill Stadium on Sunday, Mar. 27.
Senior
Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) and junior
Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.) launched home runs to lead the Hawks offense in game one. Senior
Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.), junior
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.), senior
Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.), and Maurice recorded two hits each as Saint Anselm grinded out 11 hits in the opener.
Sophomore
Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) and graduate student
Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) recorded hits for the Hawks in game two of the doubleheader.
GAME ONE: Assumption 12, Saint Anselm 6
Pezzolla posted a two-out single in the bottom of the first inning before Maurice walked to put runners on first and second but a groundout closed the inning.
Pierro doubled down the left field line to get the Hawks in business in the bottom of the second. A strikeout and a foul out would get the Greyhounds out of the inning.
Assumption put three runs on the board in the top of the third as
Nick Gaglioti singled to lead off the inning before he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Owen Podolec reached on an error to put runners on first and third.
Kevin Cox would single home Gaglioti before three consecutive walks made the score 3-0. Senior
David Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) would get an infield fly and a strike out to get out the bases loaded jam with limited damage.
The Hawks responded with a two-run home run by Maurice to right center field in the bottom of the third. Pezzolla walked with one out to set up the two-run home run. Borrelli tripled down the right field line in the at-bat following the home run but a strike out and a ground would strand the tying run at third.
A pair of walks in the top of the fourth set up
Emilio Acosta who laced a two-out double, driving in both runs, and extending the Greyhounds lead to 5-2.
Podolec added to the Assumption lead in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run which pushed the lead out to five at 7-2.
In the top of the seventh inning, senior
Shawn Morrow (Melrose, Mass.) worked out of a one-out bases loaded jam as he got a strikeout and a groundout to avoid Assumption adding to its lead.
A pair of walks in the top of the eighth inning brought
Jared Berardino to the plate. Berardino doubled to right field, scoring both runners but he was thrown out trying to extend the double to a triple. Morrow would get a groundout to close the inning.
Saint Anselm cut into the Assumption lead with two outs in bottom of the eighth inning as sophomore
Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) walked before a Pierro single followed by another walk from junior
Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.). With the bases loaded, Doran launched a ball over the right field fence for his first home run of the season. Collins would triple to right field in the ensuing at-bat but a strikeout closed the inning with Hawks trailing, 9-6.
A pair of singles and a walk got Greyhounds in business in the top of the ninth and a single by Cox would plate one run before Acosta brought home two with a single of his own, giving the visitors a 12-6 lead. Saint Anselm got runners to second and third in the bottom of the ninth but a groundout closed game one.
Junior
Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) suffered the loss, falling to 2-3 on the season after allowing three runs in 2.1 innings pitched. Hunter, Morrow, and freshman
Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) would finish the contest for the Hawks out of the bullpen.
GAME TWO: Assumption 4, Saint Anselm 0
The Assumption bats stayed hot from game one as Podolec led off with a single before advancing to second on a groundout. Acosta doubled to score Podolec for the game's opening run and he was brought home on a single by Berardino to give the visitors a 2-0 edge headed to the bottom of the first.
After a pop out to shortstop, Clough singled up the middle to get the Hawks in the hit column but a pair of strikeouts closed the inning.
Assumption tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning with Podolec reached on an error to open the inning. He quickly stole second before coming around to score on a single through the left side by Cox. Cox scored on a single by Berardino later in the inning, pushing the score to 4-0.
A leadoff double by Podolec got the Greyhounds in business in the fifth as he advanced to third on a groundout. However, freshman
Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) would get a pop out and a strikeout to get out of trouble.
Saint Anselm registered its second hit of the contest in the bottom of the sixth. Pezzolla singled to left center after a pair of strikeouts. He would advance to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball but another strikeout closed the inning.
Podolec singled to open the seventh but was picked off by senior
Andy Grygorcewicz (Northampton, Mass.). Cox doubled following the pickoff but was stranded at second as the teams headed to the bottom of the seventh.
Borrelli worked a leadoff walk before a fly out and two strikeouts closed the game with a 4-0 win for the Greyhounds.
Betty suffered the loss in game two, falling to 1-3. Betty surrendered four runs on seven hits in five innings of work while Grygorcewicz allowed just two hits in two innings of relief.
