Borrelli's five-hit game powers baseball to doubleheader split against Assumption

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) tied a program record with five hits in a single game as the Saint Anselm College baseball team split its Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with Assumption University on Sunday.

The Hawks go to 8-13 on the season with a 1-3 mark in NE10 Northeast Division play following the twinbill. The Greyhounds are now 9-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Saint Anselm heads to cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire University for what will be considered a non-conference game on Wednesday, Mar. 30 with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

The last time a student-athlete registered five hits in a single game came on Mar. 8, 2017 when Max Waddington '18 recorded five hits in a game against Bentley. Borrelli is the eighth Hawks student-athlete to reach the feat.

The Hawks 11-0 loss in game one extended the longest win streak for either team to 15 in the all-time series but the 14-2 win in game two snapped the streak, marking the first win for Saint Anselm since Mar. 9, 2017.

Freshman Danny Kent (Hanson, Mass.) led the Saint Anselm offense with a two-for-three effort at the plate in the 11-0 game one loss. The Hawks recorded six hits in the contest with four other student-athletes recording one hit apiece.

Borrelli, and seniors Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) and Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) combined to go 12-for-14 at the plate with seven runs batted in and seven runs scored in game two for the Hawks. The team registered 19 hits in the 14-2 victory marking the first win of NE10 Northeast Division play for Saint Anselm.

Junior John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) suffered the game one loss after allowing nine runs on five hits in one inning plus of work. Sophomore Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) allowed four hits and two runs in four innings of relief before freshman Roman Ercoli (Concord, Mass.) posted two no-hit innings of work to close the game for Saint Anselm.

Sophomore Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.) grabbed his second win of the season on the mound in game two after going seven innings and allowing two runs, one earned. Michel struck out two batters while allowing six hits. Junior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) came on to close the contest and did not allow a hit in his two innings of work.

GAME ONE: Assumption 11, Saint Anselm 0

Donovan got the first two batters out in the opening frame but a two-out walk got the Greyhounds in business. Connor Wironen singled which allowed Emilio Acosta to reach third and eventually score on a passed ball during Jared Berardino's at-bat. The Hawks got out of the inning when Wironen was picked off at third base, ultimately closing the inning with a 1-0 lead for Assumption.

The Greyhounds posted nine runs in the top of the second inning as Jack Barry and Christopher Rabias singled to lead off the inning before Nick Gaglioti would single home Barry. After a walk, Owen Podolec tripled to right center to clear the bases and give the Greyhounds a 5-0 lead. Three consecutive walks would score Podolec before Kevin Cox scored on a wild pitch. Two sacrifice flies sandwiched an RBI single, giving Assumption a 10-0 lead through two innings.

Berardino would reach on error in the top of the fourth inning and make it to third as the ball traveled up the right field line. He scored on a single by Barry to push the lead to 11-0.

Maurice led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to right center field and advanced to third on a groundout. However, Maurice would be stranded at third as a fly out and ground out got the Greyhounds out of the inning.

The Hawks recorded two hits in the bottom of the seventh inning as Borrelli opened the inning with a ground-rule double and a single by Kent advanced the junior to third. However, a pair of strikeouts closed the seven-inning game at 11-0 in favor of Assumption.

GAME TWO: Saint Anselm 14, Assumption 2

After getting out of a two-on two-out jam in the top of the second, the Hawks used the confidence from the end of game one to plate three runs in the bottom of the second. Maurice led off with a single before Borrelli and Pierro doubled in back-to-back at-bats. Pierro's double scored both Maurice and Borrelli, before Pierro came around to score on an RBI single by junior Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.), giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead through two innings.

Saint Anselm added two more runs in the bottom of the third as three consecutive singles loaded the bases for Borrelli who singled to bring in two more runs. However, an out at the plate and a double play closed the inning with Saint Anselm leading 5-0.

The Greyhounds got on the board in the top of the fourth inning as Wironen and Berardino reached on a single and a double before Barry brought home Wironen on a ground out. Two more ground outs got Michel out of the jam with limited damage.

The Hawks tacked on five runs in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) and graduate student Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) led off with a pair of hits. Borrelli singled to score Clough before Pierro loaded the bases for Kent who singled home two more runs, extending the lead to 8-1. Collins later drove in Kent and senior Chris Schworer (Medfield, Mass.) with a two-run single, closing the fifth with a 10-1 lead for Saint Anselm.

A sacrifice fly by Pierro brought home Pezzolla and Maurice would score on a throwing error, extending the Hawks advantage to 12-1.

After opening the seventh with a walk and a hit by pitch, the Greyhounds would get their second run on the board as Eric Preston would score from second on a throwing error to first. However, a strikeout and a fielder's choice closed the top of the seventh.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Pezzolla scored on a wild pitch before a Pierro single gave the Hawks the 14-2 edge.
