PREVIEW: Women's lacrosse set for three contests from the Sunshine State

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team heads to the Sunshine State for three games over spring break.

The team meets Flagler College on Monday, Mar. 14 before matching up with two nationally-ranked programs in Saint Leo University on Wednesday, Mar. 16 and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Friday, Mar. 18.

The Hawks posted a season-opening win over Southern Connecticut State University on Mar. 5, improving to 1-0 overall and in Northeast-10 Conference play. That marks the third consecutive season-opening win for Saint Anselm. After the spring break trip, the Hawks host Saint Michael's College in NE10 action on Tuesday, Mar. 22.

Flagler is 4-4 to open its inaugural season. In its last time out, Flagler recorded a 19-5 win over North Greenville on Mar. 9. The Saints will host UVA Wise on Thursday, Mar. 17 in their fourth consecutive home contest before hosting the Owls on Saturday, Mar. 19 to close a five-game home stand.

Saint Leo hosts the Hawks in their eighth consecutive home contest on Wednesday. The team fell to nationally-ranked Seton Hill on Mar. 10 by an 18-10 score, pushing their record to 3-5. The Lions conclude their non-conference slate on Thursday, Mar. 24 against Colorado Mesa before opening Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday, Mar. 26 against Lynn.

Embry-Riddle concludes its seven-game home stand by hosting the Hawks on Friday, Mar. 18. The team posted a 20-5 win over North Greenville on Mar. 12, improving to 7-0 on the season. The Eagles will host Alabama-Huntsville on Wednesday, Mar. 16 before welcoming Saint Anselm to Daytona Beach, Fla. The team has downed three nationally-ranked programs so far this season and most recently downed Davis & Elkins by a 23-2 score on Mar. 9.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • The Hawks posted a 17-6 win over Southern Connecticut State on Mar. 5 to open the season with a 1-0 mark overall and in NE10 play.
  • Sophomore Jess Sullivan (Wrentham, Mass.) paced the Saint Anselm offense with a career-high seven goals and nine points. Sullivan recorded four of the Hawks first six goals as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back in the contest.
  • Senior Jenna Balboni (Billerica, Mass.) added four goals for Saint Anselm with three of them coming on free position opportunities. Balboni registered one assist for a five-point performance.
  • Junior Lexi Palmisano (Woburn, Mass.) chipped in with three goals while senior Taylor Cobain (Smithfield, R.I.) scored twice in the contest.
  • Senior goalkeeper Grace Young (Merrimack, N.H.) collected the NE10 Goalkeeper of the Week honors after making seven saves in the season-opening win. Young and the Hawks defense held the Owls off the scoreboard for 28:28 of the contest, stretching from the closing seconds of the first quarter to the 1:36 mark of the third quarter.
  • Saint Anselm caused 10 turnovers and collected 25 ground balls while putting 19 shots on goal on 31 shot attempts.
SCOUTING FLAGLER
  • Flagler has opened its inaugural season with a 4-4 mark. The team opened with wins over Webber International and Ave Maria before falling to Florida Tech and Lynn. Since then, the team has posted wins over Palm Beach Atlantic and North Greenville, sandwiched around a pair of losses to nationally-ranked programs in Embry-Riddle and Rollins.
  • Jordan Shughrue leads the offensive attack with 19 goals, leading a group that has scored 120 goals this season. Four other student-athletes are in double digit scoring for the Saints.
  • Kate Piscopo leads the squad with eight assists while Jordan Green and Ally Miller follow closely with seven and six helpers each respectively. Shughrue, Piscopo, and Green are tied for the team lead with 21 points on the season.
  • Alex Eubanks has drawn five starts for the Saints in the cage. She is 3-2 with a 10.66 goals-against average and a .442 save percentage. Lauren Ribadeneira has started the other three contests and holds a 12.30 goals-against average and a .382 save percentage with a 1-2 mark.
  • Flagler was projected to finish four in the Gulf South Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, collecting 20 points and trailing Montevallo for third by three points.
SCOUTING SAINT LEO
  • Saint Leo has faced five nationally-ranked opponents already this season and the Hawks will mark their sixth opponent inside the national top-25. In those contests, the Lions are 1-4 with their win coming against #19 Mount Olive on Mar. 4. In their last time out, Saint Leo fell to #18 Seton Hill by an 18-10 score.
  • Fiona McLaughlin leads the Lions with 20 goals scored this season and is the team leader with 21 points. Four other student-athletes are in double digit scoring with Lia Lamendola ranking in second with 17 goals.
  • Meghan Bomleny has recorded a team-high 15 assists this season while Ashlee Wilsynski ranks second with nine helpers.
  • Makayla Goetz and Liz Clark have started three games each in goal for the Lions. Goetz is 2-1 on the season with a 10.89 goals-against average and a .413 save percentage. Clark holds a 16.75 goals-against average and .354 save percentage with a 1-2 record.
  • The Lions were selected to finished fourth in the Sunshine State Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. Saint Leo garnered 29 points finishing just ahead of Embry-Riddle and behind Tampa by 10 points.
SCOUTING EMBRY-RIDDLE
  • Embry-Riddle has grabbed seven wins to open the season and remains undefeated entering play on Mar. 14. The team has grabbed wins over nationally-ranked Mount Olive, Assumption, and Seton Hill. In the their most recent contest, the Eagles came away with a 20-5 victory over North Greenville on Mar. 12. The team will play Alabama-Huntsville on Wednesday, Mar. 16 before hosting the Hawks on Friday, Mar. 18.
  • Sallie Squire leads the Eagles attack with 32 goals while Murphy McDonough ranks second with 29 goals. Zariah Durham is third on the squad with 17 tallies, part of five student-athletes who have recorded double-digit goals this season.
  • McDonough has registered 22 assists this season which gives her a team-high 51 points. Anna Maurer ranks second on the team with 16 assists and is tied for fourth in points with 19.
  • Aubrey Fixen has started all seven games for Embry-Riddle. She holds a 9.09 goals-against average and a .418 save percentage. Fixen has stopped 41 of 98 shots on goal this season.
  • The Eagles finished in fifth in the SSC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 26 points. The team trailed Saint Leo by three points but finished ahead of Florida Tech and Palm Beach Atlantic by 12 points.

  • This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
ALL-TIME vs. SAINT LEO
  • The Hawks and Lions will square off for the second time in program history.
  • On Mar. 1, 2020, the Hawks posted a 13-3 season-opening win from Saint Leo, Fla. which was the start of a four-game winning streak until the remainder of the season was canceled.
  • Balboni and Cobain combined to score eight of the Hawks goals in that contest while Young made 11 saves for Saint Anselm.
ALL-TIME vs. EMBRY-RIDDLE
  • The Hawks and Eagles will meet for the second time as well.
  • Saint Anselm grabbed an 18-11 win on Mar. 3, 2020 from Daytona Beach, Fla., which was their second win of the Florida trip that season.
  • Cobain went for seven goals in that tilt, marking the most recent time, previous to Sullivan's seven-goal game against Southern Connecticut State, a student-athlete has scored seven goals in a single game. Palmisano and Balboni combined for seven goals in the win while Young added eight saves in the cage for Saint Anselm.
