Saint Anselm improved to 11-10 overall on the season with a thrilling 79-76 overtime victory at Southern New Hampshire on Tuesday. Despite a game-tying three by the Penmen, the Hawks persevered to secure a three-point win against Southern New Hampshire, who was receiving votes in the national poll.

Assumption is fresh off a 10-point victory at Saint Michael's on Tuesday, responding from a narrow 73-68 loss to the Penmen on Saturday. Since the calendar flipped to 2022, the Greyhounds have logged a three-game winning and a three-game losing streak and have traded wins and losses across the prior four games.

Fans looking to attend Thursday's game at Laska Gymnasium are expected to be familiar with the Assumption University spectator guidelines.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Senior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) had a record-matching game as the Hawks snuck past Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday by a 79-76 margin.
  • Steinman matched the program record with 43 points versus the Penmen, making 17 of her 20 free throws across the 45-minute affair. She equaled the record-setting point production of Rachel Jackson '85 at Dartmouth on Nov. 28, 1984 and the single-game free throws mark of Kristen Skoglund '96 versus Mercyhurst on Dec. 28, 1995.
  • The senior also reached 1,638 career points with the impressive effort at Southern New Hampshire, matching Liz Cranmer '91 for third place all-time on the career point scoring list at Saint Anselm. So far this season across 21 games, Steinman is averaging 20.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, reaching 400 points for the third consecutive season (434).
  • Sophomore Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) also had a huge game for Saint Anselm, scoring 20 points off seven field goals at Southern New Hampshire. She also reeled in five rebounds and handed out four assists. Turco and Steinman combined for 63 of their team's 79 points.
  • The Hawks led by five points over SNHU with 19 seconds left in regulation time, 66-61, but five missed free throws in total across the last 48 seconds of regulation kept the hosts within striking distance. These misses set up Southern New Hampshire to dramatically tie the game down the stretch as the Penmen utilized a game-tying three-point basket with mere seconds on the clock to force overtime.
  • Saint Anselm kept its composure to begin the overtime period, scoring 10 of the first 14 points of overtime to build a six-point lead with 1:04 to go. Steinman had seven points in the extra frame while junior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) hit a key triple that fueled the strong stretch of play by Saint Anselm. Southern New Hampshire hit two three-pointers in the final 41 seconds, but the Hawks held on for the victory.
  • Freshman Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) has thrown up 22 blocks on the year, ranking ninth among NE10 student-athletes. She is averaging 1.10 rejections per game for the Hawks.
  • As a team, Saint Anselm leads the NE10 in free throws made (298), free throw attempts (379) and free throw percentage (78.6%). The Hawks also rank 12th in NCAA Division II in free throw percentage, trailing the national leader from Ohio Dominican (83.9%).
  • The Hawks commit just 14 turnovers per game, on average, the fewest in the NE10.

SCOUTING ASSUMPTION

  • Assumption is ninth in NCAA Division II in three-point field goal percentage defense, limiting the opposition to just 24.3% from beyond the arc. The team ranks second in the NE10 in field goal percentage defense (36.7%).
  • Ja'Lyn Armstrong scored 27 points in her team's 10-point road victory at Saint Michael's. The Greyhounds led from start to finish, securing a six-point advantage at halftime and never looking back against the Purple Knights.
  • Assumption has committed an average of 18.1 turnovers per game, ranking in the bottom half of all NCAA Division II programs in miscues.
  • Meghan Cramb averages 2.30 three-point baskets per game for the Greyhounds, leading the NE10 in three's made (46) and placing second in three-point field goal percentage (39.7).
  • Marina Callahan and Monica Spain are averaging north of one blocked shot per game, ranking in the top-15 of NE10 student-athletes in that metric.
  • Phayre now has 420 career victories in her time between NCAA Division I Columbia and Assumption.

ALL-TIME vs. ASSUMPTION

  • Saint Anselm is 52-30 in the all-time series with Assumption, winning five of the last seven games.
  • On Feb. 2 of this season, the Hawks lost by a 67-47 margin. Assumption charged out to an 8-3 lead and never looked back, at one point scoring 14 consecutive points to build a 30-19 advantage at the break. The Greyhounds put the game out of reach in the third, shooting over 57% from the floor en route to the win. Assumption made 15 of its last 27 shots and won the second-half rebounding battle, 19-to-16.
  • Prior to the 20-point loss by Saint Anselm against the Greyhounds last Wednesday, the last regulation loss against Assumption came on Feb. 7, 2017.
  • In a narrow overtime defeat against the Greyhounds on Feb. 13, 2019, Assumption made a game-tying layup as time expired in regulation before a last-second three-point basket pushed the visiting team to a 65-64 win in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
