Men's ice hockey tripped up by Assumption, 2-1

WORCESTER, Mass. The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey fell to Assumption University by a 2-1 score in Friday's Northeast-10 Conference tilt.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 8-10-2 overall and to 5-5-2 in NE10 play. The Greyhounds improve to 10-8-1 with a 7-3-0 mark against the league. The squads conclude their three-game regular season series on Saturday, Feb. 5 with a 4 p.m. opening puck drop from Sullivan Arena.

Saint Anselm struck just 41 seconds into the contest as sophomore Jac Cordeiro (Barnstable, Mass.) netted his third goal on the season with assists going senior co-captain Kilian Hammersmith (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and junior Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.). Cordeiro's tally came on the first shot on goal in game and he has now opened the scoring for the contest in back-to-back contests.

Assumption responded with a goal of their own at 5:22 of the opening period as Dante Maribito managed to beat junior goaltender Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.).

The Hawks fired 19 shots on goal in the opening period compared to 13 for the Greyhounds.

Christopher Stamlok gave the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead 8:52 of the second period. That marks his second goal of the season which stood as the final tally of the contest.

Saint Anselm managed to outshoot Assumption in the period, 8-7, with the best chance to tie the game coming in the final two minutes of the second stanza as senior Anthony Iacullo (Barrington, Ill.) and junior Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) fired two shots on Greyhounds netminder David Altman.

Both squads put 11 shots on target in the third period. The Hawks were forced to pull Howard, opting for an extra skater in the final minute but could not net the equalizer.

Saint Anselm was scoreless on two power play chances while Assumption was 0-4 with the extra skater. The Hawks won 30 face-offs compared to 24 for the Greyhounds. Freshman Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) led the Hawks with nine draw wins.

Howard stopped 29 shots on frame for the Hawks while Altman stopped the 37 shots after the game's opening goal.
