GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped both games of its non-conference doubleheader to Adelphi University on Sunday, 5-3 and 13-1.
The Hawks fall to 0-5 on the season while Adelphi improves to 2-0. Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday, Mar. 4, Saturday, Mar. 5, and Sunday, Mar. 6 from High Point, N.C. The team has a four-game set against Post University from Truist Point. Friday's first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
Graduate student
Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) led the Hawks offense with two hits in six at-bats, scoring two runs. Sophomore
Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) launched his first collegiate home run in game one and was two-for-six on the day.
GAME ONE: Adelphi University 5, Saint Anselm College 3
Junior
Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.) led off the game with a double into the left center field gap and was quickly driven in on an RBI single by sophomore
Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.). The Panthers got a strikeout before Pezzolla was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. However, a pair of strikeouts by
Nicolas Luc got Adelphi out on the jam in the top of the first inning.
The Panthers responded with a leadoff home run from
Matt Alifano in the bottom half of the first inning. However, junior
Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) would get a pair of strikeouts and a fly out to close out the first inning.
Bedder got out of a first and second situation with a strikeout in the bottom of the second. The junior struck out the side in the inning, posting five punch outs in the first six Adelphi outs.
After a three up and three down for the Hawks to open the third, Alifano doubled to left center to open the bottom half of the inning.
Kyle Olson singled home Alifano, giving the Panthers a 2-1 lead. Junior
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) caught Olson stealing before
Michael Draskin worked a walk. Draskin was also caught stealing before Bedder got a strikeout to close the third.
Bedder would strikeout the side once again in the bottom of the fourth inning, pushing his total to nine through the first four innings.
Adelphi added two runs in the bottom of fifth inning as Olson drew a walk and was out on a fielder's choice on a ground ball to shortstop, being played by Hawks freshman
Ryan Scialabba (Cheshire, Conn.).
Tim Feliz doubled down the right field line, scoring Draskin. Feliz would score on an error in the next at-bat. Junior
Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) came on in relief for Bedder and got a strikeout to close the fifth inning.
Elmore launched a two-run home run in the top of the sixth, bringing the score to 4-3. Pezzolla doubled with one out and a groundout forced him to stay at second but Elmore wasted no time at the plate as he drove the first pitch over the left center field wall.
A pair of walks put runners on first and second for Adelphi and a double by Alifano gave the hosts a 5-3 lead. However, Mosseau worked out of the jam getting an infield pop-up and a strikeout to strand the runners.
Elmore reached base via hit by pitch to lead the off the ninth but two strikeouts a fielder's choice closed the contest, giving Adelphi a 5-3 win in game one.
Bedder suffered the loss, going 4.2 innings on the mound for the Hawks. He struck out 10 batters, allowing four hits and four runs, three earned. Mosseau threw for 3.1 innings and allowed two hits and one run while striking out five.
GAME TWO: Adelphi University 13, Saint Anselm College 1
Pezzolla doubled to center field with two outs in the top of the first inning and was driven home on the next pitch as Borrelli tripled to right field, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers tied the contest in the bottom half of the inning as Alifano led off the inning with a walk before Olson singled. Draskin walked to load the bases setting up Feliz who singled home Alifano, tying the score. However, junior
John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) struck out the next batter before getting an inning ending double play to get out of the early trouble.
Adelphi posted three runs in the bottom of the second thanks to a three run homer by Alifano. An inning opening walk was followed by a single. After getting a ground ball and an out, Alifano sent a ball to deep right center, driving in three runs. Donovan would get out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
The Panthers posted two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Alifano and Olson drew walks, setting up Draskin who doubled to left field, driving in both runs and extending the lead to 6-1.
Adelphi added four runs in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch, singles by Olson and Feliz, and a double from
Johnny Catuosco which gave the hosts an 11-1 lead.
A pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth pushed the Adelphi lead to 13-1, which would end up as the final score in the seven inning second game.
Donovan suffers his second loss of the season after allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three in two innings of work. Sophomore
Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) and freshman
Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) came on in relief as each posted two innings of work on the mound.
