HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team grabbed its first win of the 2022 season, downing Post University by a 4-2 score on Friday.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 1-5 on the season while the Eagles fall to 2-7. The teams are set to square off again on Saturday, Mar. 5 from High Point, N.C. Game times for the doubleheader are slated for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Both squads went three up and three down in the first inning before Post earned the game's first base runner on a walk. However, a pair of strikeouts by junior
Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) and a fly out ended the inning.
Post would jump on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning as
Rian Balbino led off the inning with a hit by pitch and
Evan Cornwell singled to put runners on first and second.
Michael Pavelchak doubled home Balbino before
Hunter Keller registered an RBI groundout which gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Bedder would settle in and get an out on a fielder's choice and a fly out to close the third inning.
Saint Anselm responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third inning as senior
Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) singled to lead off the inning and a single by senior
Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) put runners on the corners. Junior
Brady Doran (Greenville, S.C.) got a ball in the air to left field, deep enough to score Pierro, making the score 2-1.
The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Collins led off with an infield single followed by a Doran walk. However, a groundout advanced the runners to second and third before another groundout by graduate student
Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) drove in Collins to tie the score. Junior
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) singled through the left side to score Doran, which gave Saint Anselm a 3-2 edge. The Hawks would continue to threaten in the inning with a pair of walks but a strikeout closed out a bases loaded opportunity for the Hawks.
Saint Anselm added to its lead in the bottom of the eighth inning as a Borrelli fielder's choice, a single by senior
Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.), and a walk from sophomore
Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) set up another bases loaded chance. After a strikeout, freshman
Ryan Scialabba (Cheshire, Conn.) drew a walk which brought in Borrelli, giving the Hawks a 4-2 lead.
Junior
Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) opened the top of the ninth with a strikeout before allowing a double. However, Mosseau struck out the next two batters to give the Hawks their first win of the 2022 campaign.
Bedder recorded his first win of the season after going six innings, striking out 11 batters and allowing just three hits. Mosseau posted three scoreless innings in relief, earning the save. He allowed just two hits
while striking out seven in his appearance. Collins led the Hawks offense with two hits while four other student-athletes registered one hit.
