SUTHERLAND, Va. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped its non-conference contest to West Chester University by a 16-0 score on Sunday.
The Hawks close their opening weekend of play with a 0-3 record while the Golden Rams improve to 3-0. Saint Anselm heads to Adelphi University on Saturday, Feb. 26 and Sunday, Feb. 27 with a doubleheader slated for each day. Game times are scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. both days.
Freshman
Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) started on the mound for the Hawks, making his collegiate debut. Classmate
Zachary Abbott (Gloucester, Mass.) made his collegiate debut on the mound in relief.
After both teams went three up and three down in the first inning, West Chester opened the second with single and a double putting runners on second and third with no outs. Betty managed to get a ground ball before walking one to load the bases. However, he would get ground balls by the next two batters to get out of the jam.
West Chester would put 12 runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning as
Joe Kaleck led off with a walk which was followed by a single from
Justin Horn. Another walk loaded the bases before
Luke Cantwell singled up the middle driving in two.
Keith Flaherty broke the contest open with a three-run homerun and
Corey Stouffer made it back-to-back round trips, pushing the lead to 6-0. Saint Anselm got a fly out but errors on consecutive plays extended the inning and the Golden Rams made sure to capitalize, netting four doubles and a walk before the Hawks got a ground ball out to close out the inning.
The Hawks broke through in the hit column when graduate student
Salvatore Pezzolla (East Greenbush, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double which was followed by a base on balls, drawn by sophomore
Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.). However, two strikeouts and an infield fly got the Golden Rams out of the inning.
West Chester added three runs in its half of the eighth inning and tacked on one more in the ninth, giving them the 16-0 win.
Betty went four innings in his first collegiate start allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out four. Sophomore
Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.), junior
Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.), Abbott, and senior
Andy Grygorcewicz (Northampton, Mass.) came on in relief for Saint Anselm.
