MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team fell to Franklin Pierce University by an 76-65 score on Wednesday.
The Hawks fall to 13-8 on the season with a 9-7 mark against the Northeast-10 Conference while the Ravens improve to 13-8 overall and 10-6 against the league.
Junior
Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) posted a team-high 20 points while junior
Owen McGlashan (Marlton, N.J.) and senior
Gustav Suhr-Jessen (Virum, Denmark) recorded 13 points each. Arbuckle, Suhr-Jessen, and senior
Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.) each grabbed six boards for the Hawks. McGlashan reached a career-high with 13 points for Saint Anselm.
Paul moves to seventh all-time on the Saint Anselm scoring list, passing
Matt Burdick '82 with 1,791 career points across 113 games in a Saint Anselm uniform. Senior
Alonzo Jackson (Medford, Mass.) tacked on one block for the Hawks, tying with
Tim Aramini '94 for third place on the all-time rejections list for Saint Anselm.
Isaiah Moore got a jumper to fall which gave the Ravens a 61-50 lead with 7:08 to go in the second half. Saint Anselm responded with an 11-0 run over the next 2:22 to knot the score at 63 as Suhr-Jessen, Arbuckle, and Paul combined for those 11 points
– the latter made a free throw to draw the game even at 63.
The Ravens took a full timeout after the made free throw and used a 13-0 scoring run to open its largest lead of the game at 76-63 with 1:07 left in play. Paul managed to get a layup to fall with just under one minute left, pushing the score to 76-65, but the Hawks were unable to overcome the late Ravens scoring run.
Earlier in the contest, the teams traded baskets in the opening minutes but a three by McGlashan and a layup by Tention netted the Hawks a 12-7 lead with just under 13 minutes left in the first half.
The Ravens rallied with an 8-0 run themselves with Moore draining back-to-back shots to close the run, giving the visitors a 15-12 lead.
Throughout most of the first half, the teams battled for control as it wasn't until Moore found the bottom of the net with a jumper with 3:07 left that either side led by more than three points since the early five-point Hawks lead.
Ahead by seven points at the half, Franklin Pierce's
Sean Trumper put home a pair of free throws in the early minutes of the second half, which gave the Ravens a nine-point edge which they would hover around until the Hawks used a 9-2 run to cut their deficit to two at 42-40 with 14:36 remaining in the half.
Franklin Pierce quickly regained its three possession advantage as
Maxwell Zegarowski, Brandon Kolek, and Traore all got shots to fall, giving the Ravens a 50-42 lead.
Throughout the second half, Franklin Pierce would maintain their advantage, never letting it get below five points until the aforementioned Hawks 11-0 run.
Saint Anselm welcomes Saint Michael's to the Hilltop on Saturday, Feb. 19 for a 3:30 p.m. opening tip-off. The Hawks will honor their senior class prior to the start of the tilt with the Purple Knights.
