MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team scored a 96-60 win on Senior Day over Saint Michael's College on Saturday.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 14-8 on the season with a 10-7 record against the league. The Purple Knights fall to 8-16 overall and 4-13 in conference contests. Saint Anselm heads to Southern Connecticut State University on Monday, Feb. 21 in a makeup contest from Jan. 29. The opening tip-off against the Owls is slated for 1 p.m. from New Haven, Conn.
Saint Anselm honored four seniors in a pregame ceremony including
Joey Belli (Wayne, N.J.),
Alonzo Jackson (Medford, Mass.),
Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.), and
Gustav Suhr-Jessen (Virum, Denmark).
Paul became the eighth student-athlete in the men's basketball program history to eclipse the 1,800 points mark as he canned 20 in the contest. Paul added a season-high 17 rebounds in the game for his sixth double-double of the season.
Senior
Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) tied a game-high 25 points on nine of 15 shooting from the floor. Jackson, Suhr-Jessen, and junior
Owen McGlashan (Marlton, N.J.) all netted double-digit points for the Hawks offense. Junior
Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) recorded nine assists in the win.
The squads battled in the opening minutes as a pair of three's from
Patrick Gardner gave the Purple Knights a 10-5 lead just 3:05 into the first half.
Jackson would score six consecutive points for the Hawks, giving them a 16-14 lead with 11:30 left in the opening half. Saint Anselm maintained its lead throughout the middle of the first half, which got as low as two when
Nic Button sunk a pair of free throws.
A 13-0 run that spanned 3:34 of the first half pushed Saint Anselm to a 15-point lead with 3:57 remaining until the break. Tention, Paul, and Suhr-Jessen accounted for the Hawks points on the run.
Saint Anselm continued to build upon its lead to close the half, ultimately holding a 46-30 lead at the break.
A pair of threes by Crews and Gardner cut the Hawks lead to 13 within the first two minutes of the second half but a 10-0 run in 1:31 gave Saint Anselm a 23-point edge which they continued to build upon. The lead grew to as many as 39 when junior
Preston Urbancic (Naples, Fla.) drained a three with 1:28 remaining in the contest.
The teams traded baskets in the final minute with the Hawks grabbing a 96-60 win on Senior Day.
