PREVIEW: Women's basketball continues NE10 play against Franklin Pierce, American Int'l

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team takes on two Northeast-10 Conference opponents this week, hosting Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, Dec. 6 and heading to American International on Thursday, Dec. 8.

Saint Anselm owns a 2-5 overall record alongside a 1-4 mark in NE10 play, having lost four of its last five games since the Wednesday, Nov. 16 league opener against nationally-ranked Bentley. Last time out, the Hawks posted a 12-point loss at home to Le Moyne on Friday, Dec. 2.

Franklin Pierce (3-5, 1-3 NE10) is in the midst of a two-game losing skid, falling at home to Le Moyne last Wednesday before dropping a 79-51 result at New Haven this past Saturday. The Ravens are winless on the road through three games to date.

American International (3-4, 2-1 NE10) will take on Le Moyne this Tuesday, Dec. 6 before hosting the Hawks on Thursday. Entering the game against the Dolphins, AIC has won two games in a row, toppling New Haven last Wednesday before easing past Saint Michael's on Saturday.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Last time out, the Hawks were saddled with a 64-52 loss by Le Moyne. Sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) was 7-for-13 from the floor, scoring a team-leading 15 points with six rebounds. Senior Macy Spinks (Luton, England) poured home 12 points, matching classmate McKenzy Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine) point-for-point.
  • Le Moyne dominated the glass in its victory, hauling in 42 rebounds and limiting the Hawks to just 29 caroms. Saint Anselm shot 33.9% from the floor, making just four of its 18 three-point baskets, while Le Moyne shot 41.2% for the game with 16 free-throw makes on 23 attempts.
  • Senior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) is averaging a career-high 12 points per game this season, making her first seven career starts. Prior to the year, Robles totaled just 2.97 points per game across her first 37 appearances in a Saint Anselm uniform.
  • Spinks shot just 10-for-28 from three-point land last year in 26 games, but this season, has the same exact statistics in both make's (10) and shots attempted (28) from distance in just seven games. She is averaging 6.3 points per contest so far this season.
  • Saint Anselm is generating just 12.6 points off the bench per game while its opponents are pouring home nearly 23 points per game from its reserves. The Hawks racked up a season-high 22 points off the bench against Pace on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

SCOUTING FRANKLIN PIERCE

  • The Ravens scored single digits in two of the four quarters against New Haven last time out in a 28-point road loss. Shooting a season-low 36.2% from the floor, the Ravens did continue to shoot well from the charity stripe, making nearly 80% of its shots (11-for-14) from the line.
  • Franklin Pierce began the month ranked sixth in NCAA Division II in free throw proficiency (82.8%) and remain there entering Tuesday's tilt, checking in with an 82.2% mark. The team also is shooting 35.4% from beyond the arc, placing fourth in the NE10 and 50th in the country.
  • Ines Gimenez Monserrat, her team's leader in points per game (17.9), leads the NE10 in both field goals made (58) and field goal attempts (126). Her 46.0% field goal percentage stands as the league's seventh-best figure.
  • Anna Badosa Soler has thrown up seven blocks, ranking fourth in the NE10, while Gabriela Sanchez-Parodi and her 2.38 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks second in the league. Both student-athletes play north of 33 minutes per game, ranking in the top-11 of student-athletes in the conference.
  • The Ravens rank last in the NE10 in offensive rebounds per game (8.5), three-point attempts per game (12.4) and turnovers per game (21.2).

SCOUTING AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

  • The Yellow Jackets entered this past week leading the NE10 in both steals per game (11.4) and turnover margin (5.86), forcing 20.29 miscues per game to rank second in the conference. American International also takes care of the ball, committing just 14.4 turnovers per tilt to rank fifth in the league.
  • Kayla Robinson leads the league in both free throws made (35) and free throw attempts (51) while averaging 2.57 steals per contest, ranking third in the NE10. She is averaging 15.7 points per game to rank in the top-10 in the league in point scoring.
  • Tia-Marie Martinez has thrown up 16 three-pointers, the third-most by a conference student-athlete, and is shooting 34% from beyond the three-point arc this season.
  • The Yellow Jackets posted a 10-16 record last season, falling at Saint Anselm in the First Round of NE10 postseason play. AIC led after one quarter before the Hawks pulled away with 33 of the game's next 53 points.

ALL-TIME vs. FRANKLIN PIERCE, AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

  • Saint Anselm is looking for its 40th victory over Franklin Pierce in the all-time series – the Hawks have defeated just four other opponents 40 or more times, including Saint Michael's (56), Assumption (53), Southern New Hampshire (52) and Merrimack (46).
  • Saint Anselm is riding an 11-game winning streak over Franklin Pierce that dates back to Jan. 2, 2016.
  • The Hawks are just two wins away from reaching 40 victories over American International as well, coming into the game with a 38-32 advantage versus the Yellow Jackets.
  • Saint Anselm has won eight in a row over the Yellow Jackets since Jan. 20, 2016 but AIC had won 15 in a row prior to that date.
