MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team recorded a 63-60 loss on Tuesday at the hands of Franklin Pierce University in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Saint Anselm drops to 2-6 overall on the season and to 1-5 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Franklin Pierce (4-5, 2-3 NE10) snapped an 11-game losing skid against the Hawks, who led by as many as 15 points in the game.
Senior McKenzy Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine) and senior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) scored 11 points each while sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) posted 10 for the Hawks. Ouellette also hauled in a career-high eight rebounds, dishing out three assists with two steals as well.
The Hawks were ahead 47-38 with just 2:01 left in the third quarter before the Ravens fired off a dominant 18-2 scoring run that spanned two quarters. Trailing by a 54-49 margin at that point, Saint Anselm responded with nine of the game's next 13 points to tie the game at 58 with 1:41 left in regulation time.
Franklin Pierce missed a layup just seconds later, but got a key offensive rebound that led to a jumper from Ines Gimenez Monserrat. From there, the Hawks got a Turco jumper to go with just 39 ticks left on the scoreboard to bring the score even at 60.
Gimenez Monserrat reached 12 points for Franklin Pierce with a basket just seven seconds later, creating a two-point edge. After a Hawks timeout to advance the ball, Saint Anselm turned the ball over but were fortunate to get the ball back with 18 seconds after Franklin Pierce went one-for-two from the line.
Saint Anselm had two open three-point baskets in the waning seconds, but could not connect on either one. The Ravens made one more free throw down the other end of the floor, but Saint Anselm did not generate a shot attempt in the final five seconds of regulation.
Franklin Pierce, led by 25 points by Sara Macary, shot 65.5% from the floor in the second half and won the rebounding battle, 19-to-13, in the final 20 minutes.
Saint Anselm returns to action Thursday, Dec. 8, taking on American International on the road at 5:30 p.m. in NE10 play.
