SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team was saddled with a 58-46 road loss at American International College on Thursday in Northeast-10 Conference play.
The Hawks drop to 2-7 overall on the season and to 1-6 against NE10 opponents while the Yellow Jackets (5-4, 4-1 NE10) snap an eight-game losing skid to Saint Anselm, having won four games in a row.
Junior Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) paced the Hawks offense with 16 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) scored 10 points with five rebounds. Senior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) handed out five assists, including four in the first half, and threw up three blocks in defeat.
Ahead by a 39-34 margin with 4:11 to go in the third quarter, the Hawks made just one of their final 16 attempts from the floor, including an 0-for-13 mark in the final quarter of action, while committing nine turnovers in that span. AIC scored 24 of the game's final 31 points, securing the victory.
Saint Anselm used a 10-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters to capture a game-high lead of nine points, 17-8. The Yellow Jackets responded by dropping 21 of the final 31 points in the first half, leading by just two points at the break.
The Hawks seemingly righted the ship coming out of halftime, pouring home 10 points to start while limiting the hosts to just one three-point basket in the first five-plus minutes of game play.
Saint Anselm owned a 16-9 scoring advantage in the third quarter, but the 20-3 fourth quarter for AIC via 7-for-10 shooting fueled the victory.
The Hawks head to Post University on Friday, Dec. 16 for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference showdown with the Eagles.
