PREVIEW: Women's basketball returns to action at Saint Michael's

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team has won two games in a row and will look to close the calendar year strong on Saturday, Dec. 31 at Saint Michael's College.

With a 1:30 p.m. tip in Colchester, Vt., the Hawks carry a 4-7 overall record alongside a 1-6 mark in Northeast-10 Conference play. Saint Michael's owns a 1-7 overall record and remains in search of its first victory in league competition.

Saint Anselm eked out a 70-69 victory at Post on Friday, Dec. 16 before securing a convincing 54-38 win over nationally-ranked Daemen on Sunday, Dec. 18 prior to the Holiday break. The Hawks won back-to-back games for the first time since late February 2022.

Saint Michael's took down Mercy (N.Y.) on Saturday, Nov. 12 by a 73-64 margin but has lost six games in a row entering Saturday's showdown with the Hawks. The Purple Knights lead the NE10 in three-point attempts per game (23.4) and blocks per game (3.8) but are last in scoring offense (51.6).

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Across the team's two-game winning streak, sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) is averaging a team-best 14.5 points per game while junior Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) has produced 12.5 points per tilt.
  • Senior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) is the third double-digit point scorer with 10.5 points on average. All three of the aforementioned Hawks student-athletes are averaging at least six rebounds per game in the last two games as well.
  • Turco leads the NE10 with a 90.9% free throw percentage, making 50 of her first 55 free throws this season. She also ranks eighth with a 39.5% field goal percentage as her 16.2 points per game leads the Hawks roster and is sixth in the conference.
  • Robles ranks seventh in the NE10 with 7.5 rebounds per game this season and her one block per game is the seventh-best figure among the league's student-athletes.
  • As a team, the Hawks rank third in the NE10 in free throw percentage (77.1%) and free throws made per game (11.91). The team is third defensively by allowing opponents to shoot just 37.5% from the floor cumulatively.
  • Head Coach Corey Boilard is just one victory shy of 80 in his Saint Anselm career, ranking third all-time in program history. Dating back to the 2012-13 season where he made his coaching debut at Johnson & Wales (R.I.), he owns a 163-102 (.615) overall record in 10 seasons.

SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S

  • Saint Michael's put up 27 points in the fourth quarter last time out at Caldwell in a narrow 66-63 defeat. Despite a 51-to-38 edge in rebounding, the Purple Knights were down by a 62-45 deficit in the final five-plus minutes before firing off a 16-0 run that came up just short.
  • Paige Slaven, a junior, leads the Purple Knights with 11.8 points per game while Emma MacDonough, a graduate student, is not far behind with 11.5 per tilt. Slaven is also tied for the team lead with 5.8 rebounds per contest while MacDonough hauls in 5.4 caroms per game.
  • Anika Kapral is throwing up a league-leading 1.6 blocks per game while matching Slaven with 5.8 rebounds. Her 3.2 offensive rebounds per game ranks sixth in the NE10.
  • The Purple Knights have recorded over 20 turnovers in six of the team's eight games and are shooting just 61.5% from the free throw line this season.

ALL-TIME vs. SAINT MICHAEL'S

  • Saint Anselm holds the edge in the all-time series, 56-24. The 56 victories by the Hawks are the most against any opponent in team history, just ahead of Assumption (53) and Southern New Hampshire/New Hampshire College (52).
  • The Hawks have won each of the last nine games against the Purple Knights dating back to Feb. 11, 2017. Saint Anselm also enjoys a modest four-game winning streak over Saint Michael's in Vermont.
  • Saint Anselm owns a six-game winning streak over Saint Michael's in games played at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
  • Saint Anselm has enjoyed comfortable margins of victory in the last six games, with no game closer than 17 points and three of those tilts decided by 33 or more points.
