PREVIEW: Men's ice hockey hosts Southern New Hampshire in crosstown battle

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team hosts crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire in a pair of Northeast-10 Conference tilts to conclude the fall semester on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3.

The Hawks captured the Terry Moran Invitational Championship last weekend as they downed Buffalo State College by a 5-2 score on Nov. 25 before scoring a 4-3 win over Castleton University in the Championship on Nov. 26. With the weekend sweep, Saint Anselm is off to its best start through its opening 10 games since the 2012-13 season at 7-2-1. Following the winter break, the Hawks will be back in
action on Friday, Dec. 30 at SUNY Oswego in their opening game of the Oswego Tournament.

The Penmen suffered a 4-2 loss to New England College in the Stovepipe Tournament Championship after downing Tufts University by a 4-3 score on Nov. 26. Southern New Hampshire is now 4-7-0 on its season and will be back in action following the winter break on Friday, Jan. 6 when they host the Hawks from the Ice Den.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Senior co-captain Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) collected the NE10 Player of the Week on Nov. 28 after leading the Hawks with three goals and two assists for five points in the Terry Moran Invitational. Andary was named the tournament Most Valuable Player after aiding the Hawks to their first tournament championship since the 2016-17 season.
  • The senior is tied for sixth in the NE10 with 11 points. His six goals are tied for fourth in the conference while his five assists are tied for 16th.
  • Senior co-captain Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) leads the squad with 12 points. He is third on the team with five goals scored and is second in assists with seven. Compared to the rest of the NE10, Hayes is tied for third in points, tied for sixth in goals, and tied for eighth in helpers.
  • Sophomore Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) leads the Hawks offense with seven goals which are tied for second in the NE10. He is tied for third on the team with 10 points.
  • Senior co-alternate captain Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) holds the conference lead with 10 assists and is tied with Reynolds for third on the squad with 10 points.
  • Senior goaltender Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) leads the NE10 with a 2.86 goals-against average and is second with a 0.909 save percentage. Howard's 259 saves are good for third in the conference.
  • Howard is now tied with Chris Devin '98 for seventh all-time in wins with 26. Just ahead of Howard are Colin Soucy '19 who registered 27 wins while on the Hilltop and current Hawks assistant coach John Herrick '97 who collected 28 wins. The senior is also 14th in team annals with 1,338 career saves and can pass Soucy for 13th on the list with 12 saves.
  • The Hawks have netted seven goals in 39 power play opportunities, good for a 17.9% conversion rate. The penalty kill has been shorthanded 56 times and has surrendered eight goals, good for an 85.7% penalty kill rate.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • George Thurston is the lone Southern New Hampshire student-athlete in double-digit points this season. Thurston has netted seven goals and assisted on four others for 11 points.
  • Derek Flynn and Brendan Lynch are tied for third in the NE10 in assists as they both have posted eight helpers. Both student-athletes have found the back of the net once, pushing them to nine points apiece which is tied for second on the squad.
  • Ryan Pomposelli, the most recent NE10 Rookie of the Week, is second on the Penmen with four goals scored while Ryan Coady and Matt Amante are tied for third with three goals each.
  • Adam Mercer has drawn nine starts in the Penmen goal. He is 4-5-0 on the season with a 3. 98 goals-against average and a 0.892 save percentage. His 280 total saves are second most in the NE10.
  • The Southern New Hampshire power play is converting at 19.7%, netting 14 goals in 71 power play opportunities. The penalty kill is operating at 78.8%, allowing 14 goals in 66 times shorthanded.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • The Hawks and Penmen are meeting for the 52nd time in the all-time series and the second and third times in the 2022-23 season. Saint Anselm is 39-11-1 against Southern New Hampshire in men's ice hockey.
  • The teams opened the season on Oct. 28 with the Hawks netting a 5-1 win over the Penmen.
  • Since the programs met on Feb. 21, 2020, the squads have alternated wins and have grabbed three wins each in those six tilts.
