SHELTON, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team skated to a 3-1 win over Post University in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in NE10 contests while the Eagles move to 1-1-0 on the season and in conference play. Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday, Nov. 11 when they welcome Assumption University to the Hilltop for a 7 p.m. opening puck drop from Sullivan Arena.
Senior
Mark Leach (Londonderry, N.H.), sophomore
Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.), and junior
Will Christensen (Ridgefield, Conn.) netted one goal each for the Hawks in Saturday's contest.
The Eagles struck first just 3:04 in the opening period as
Connor Barter redirected a point shot from
Trey DeLoury. The Eagles forced a turnover in the neutral zone which set up the scoring chance.
The Hawks knotted the contest at one with a four-on-four goal from Leach. Strong passing in the neutral zone from Christensen and junior
Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) allowed Leach to sneak by the Post defense and convert on a breakaway chance at 4:44 of the second stanza.
Saint Anselm took a 2-1 lead at 10:56 of the second period when Reynolds potted a rebound chance off a long shot from junior
Jac Cordeiro (Barnstable, Mass.).
The Hawks extended their lead to 3-1 at 13:55 of the third period as Christensen would fire shot on a feed from junior
Connor Snowdy (Cary, N.C.). The initial shot attempt was turned aside but Christensen battled in front of the goal and buried his own rebound for his second point of the tilt. For Snowdy, the helper marks the first point of his collegiate career.
After the Hawks managed to kill off a penalty, the Eagles were whistled for one themselves with just over 1:30 left to play in the contest which sealed the contest for Saint Anselm who took game two of the two-game conference series by a 3-1 score.
Saint Anselm held a 40-36 edge in shots on goal in the contest. Neither side found the back of the net on the power play as the Hawks had five chances while the Eagles had six. The Eagles won 40 of the game's 70 faceoffs. Senior
Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) led Saint Anselm with a team-high 12 wins from the dots.
Senior goaltender
