MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team suffered a 7-4 loss to Assumption University in Friday's Pink in the Rink tilt.
The Hawks drop to 3-2-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play while the Greyhounds improve to 3-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference contests. The teams conclude their two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 12 from Sullivan Arena with the opening puck drop scheduled for 5 p.m.
Sophomore
Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) netted two goals for Saint Anselm while senior
Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) and junior
Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) added a goal each in the tilt.
Reynolds opened the scoring at 6:36 of the first period when he collected a pass from junior
Jac Cordeiro (Barnstable, Mass.) in a two-on-one and beat Greyhounds goaltender
Drew Benedict with a strong move to the backhand.
Assumption netted a pair of goals to close out the first period as
Dara Conneely buried a rebound chance at 13:37 before
Christopher Stalmok redirected a feed from
William Smith at 17:58 which gave the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead through the opening 20 minutes of play.
After a nearly scoreless second period, Schwartz would one-time home a pass from senior
Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) at 19:51 of the middle frame, knotting the score at two through two periods.
Reynolds gave the Hawks an early lead in the third as he put a low shot on Benedict that snuck through the five-hole and into the back of the net just 1:06 into the final regulation period.
However, the Greyhounds netted five consecutive goals to take a commanding 7-3 lead in the contest. Assumption netted four goals in just over four minutes of game time as
Colin Philippon, Stalmok,
Sean O'Connell, and Conneely all managed to find the back of the goal in that stretch.
Assumption added to its lead with a power play tally at 16:20 of the period but Hayes would one-time a pass from senior
Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) on the power play with 1:25 left to play, pushing the contest to 7-4.
Senior
Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) faced 38 shots on goal and turned aside 31 of them while Benedict made 30 saves on 34 shots on target.
The squads combined for 15 power play opportunities, eight for Assumption and seven for Saint Anselm. The Greyhounds found the back of the goal on three of those chances while the Hawks found the twine twice.
