ALBANY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team was saddled with a 59-58 loss on Wednesday at the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference play.
Saint Anselm falls to 2-4 overall on the year and to 1-3 versus NE10 opponents while Saint Rose improves to 4-2 on the season, winning all but one of its four league contests to date.
The Hawks maintained a 58-51 lead with 2:21 left in regulation time, but Saint Rose ended the game on an 8-0 scoring spurt that culminated with a go-ahead free throw with three seconds to go. The Golden Knights made three of their final four shots while the Hawks were held scoreless.
Junior Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) scored 27 points, including 14 in the first half to help her team to a 29-24 advantage after 20 minutes. Senior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) produced 12 points and six rebounds, including the last three-point basket for her team to create the seven-point lead in the last three minutes.
Sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) hauled in eight rebounds with six points and three assists in the defeat. Collectively, the Hawks were out-gained on the glass (39-to-34) as Saint Rose, ranked second in the nation in offensive rebounds, had 14 of those that led to 16 second-chance points.
Saint Anselm led by as many as eight points with 4:19 left in the third quarter as an 11-4 scoring run by the Hawks was fueled by six points from Turco. Saint Rose helped complete the comeback by scoring eight of the final 11 points of the third quarter, including a triple with four seconds left in the stanza.
The fourth-quarter comeback by Saint Rose saw the team combine to shoot 50% from the floor. Catherine Finnerty and Aniya McDonald-Perry each scored seven points in the final 10 minutes alone, finishing with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
Saint Anselm returns to action Friday, Dec. 2, hosting Le Moyne at 5:30 p.m.
