PREVIEW: Men's ice hockey battles Post in pair of NE10 tilts

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team heads to Post University for a weekend pair of Northeast-10 Conference tilts on Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5.

Friday's opening puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. while Saturday is set for 2:45 p.m. Both contests will be played at the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton, Conn.

The Hawks skated to a 5-1 season opening win on Oct. 28 over crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University before a grabbing a 6-5 overtime victory over the University of Southern Maine on Oct. 29, opening the season with a 2-0-0 overall record and 1-0-0 record in league contests. Following the series with the Eagles, the Hawks will host the 2021-22 NE10 Champions, Assumption University, in a pair on contests on Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12.

The Eagles are making their 2022-23 season debut against the Hawks. The team skated to the NE10 Championship game last season but fell to Assumption by a 4-3 score in that contest. Post recorded an 11-15-1 record overall in 2021-22 with a 7-9-1 mark in NE10 play. The squad has a quick turnaround following the two game set with the Hawks as the Eagles host Westfield State University on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Junior Will Christensen (Ridgefield, Conn.) and senior co-alternate captain Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) registered four points each between the pair of games to open the season. Christensen netted one goal and added three assists while Murphy notched a team-high four helpers.
  • Senior co-captain Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) was the lone Saint Anselm student-athlete to net a goal in each game and leads the squad with two goals.
  • Junior co-alternate captain Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) netted the overtime game-winner against the Huskies, aiding the Hawks to the 6-5 win and to overcome five one-goal deficits in the contest.
  • Freshman Luke Linart (Holland, Mich.) was named the NE10 Rookie of the Week after scoring a goal and adding two assists between the two games. Linart netted a goal in his collegiate debut against the Penmen and then posted two assists against the Huskies.
  • Saint Anselm netted a league-high 11 goals and is averaging 5.50 goals per game early in the 2022-23 season.
  • Senior Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) turned aside 57 shots on goal between the two wins and owns a 2.96 goals-against average and a 0.905 save percentage. Howard needs eight wins to tie the men's ice hockey program record for career wins at 37 which is currently held by Tom Gavin '75 and Jim Merola '05.
SCOUTING POST
  • The Eagles return 15 student-athletes from last season's roster and brought in 13 freshmen to aid the formation of this season's squad. The team sits at a roster size of 30 ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.
  • Patrick Murphy leads the returners as he registered 20 points in 27 games last season. He was tied for second on the team with eight goals while leading the Eagles with 12 assists.
  • Jack Engdahl was tied for third on last season's team with 14 points. He netted four goals and added 10 helpers which were second most on the squad.
  • Drew Blodgett appeared in seven games in the goal for the Eagles. He totaled 97 saves and owned a 3.31 goals-against average and a 0.890 save percentage.
  • Post led the NE10 in total saves (869) last season. The Eagles allowed just one shorthanded goal which was the lowest in the conference. The team also led the NE10 in penalty kill percentage at 83.6, allowing 19 goals in 116 times shorthanded.
  • The Eagles were projected to finish in a tie for fourth in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' poll. Head coach Tim Richter will be making his head coaching debut for the Eagles in Friday's contest.
ALL-TIME vs. POST
  • The Hawks and Eagles are meeting for the 12th and 13th times in the all-time series. Saint Anselm has won each of the first 11 tilts against the Eagles.
  • Saint Anselm was 3-0-0 against Post in last season's meetings with the most recent matchup coming on Feb. 15, 2022 from Sullivan Arena, a 5-2 win for the Hawks.
  • When playing on the road against Post, the Hawks are 6-0-0 all-time in men's ice hockey.
  • In the three tilts last season, Saint Anselm held a 14-3 advantage in goals scored.
