PREVIEW: Men's ice hockey to play in the Terry Moran Invitational Tournament

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team heads to Castleton University for the Terry Moran Invitational Tournament on Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26.

The Hawks will battle Buffalo State on Friday with the opening puck drop slated for 4 p.m. before meeting either Castleton or Franklin Pierce on Saturday. Saturday's contest will either be at 1 p.m. or 4 p.m. depending on the Hawks results against the Bengals.

The Hawks skated to a 1-1 tie on Nov. 18 before posting a 3-2 win on Nov. 19 against Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference play. Saint Anselm improves to 5-2-1 on the season with a 4-2-1 record in conference play. Following the contests in the Terry Moran Invitational Tournament, the Hawks will conclude their fall semester with a pair of home contests against crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3.

The Bengals grabbed a 5-1 win over SUNY Potsdam on Nov. 18 before falling by a 4-3 score on Nov. 19 to Plattsburgh State, pushing them to 4-3-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The team will host SUNY Geneseo on Friday, Dec. 2 as part of four games to close the fall semester.

The Spartans split a pair of home contests last weekend as they netted a 4-3 win over the University of Southern Maine before falling to nationally-ranked Babson College, 4-1. Castleton enters the tournament with a 2-5-0 overall record and 2-2-0 in New England Hockey Conference action and will make a trip to Hobart and Elmira on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3.

The Ravens hosted Southern New Hampshire for a pair of NE10 tilts and suffered a 7-4 loss on Nov. 18 before collecting a 5-4 win in overtime the following day. The squad is 5-3-0 on the season and 3-3-0 in conference tilts and will host Post University on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3 before a pair of games at NCAA Division I Long Island University to conclude the 2022 calendar year.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Senior Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) was part of the NE10 men's ice hockey weekly honor roll after having a hand in all three Hawks goals in Saturday's win. On the season, the senior co-captain is tied for second on the team with eight points coming from four goals and four assists.
  • Junior alternate captain Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) leads the team with nine points. He is tied for second on the team with Hayes in goals while ranking second in assists with five.
  • Senior alternate captain Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) is tied for the conference lead with eight assists. Murphy is tied with Hayes for second on the team with eight points.
  • Sophomore Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) holds the top spot on the team with five goals scored this season.
  • The NE10 Goaltender of the Week, senior Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) is third in the conference in goals-against average (2.96) and in save percentage (.907) while ranking second in total saves (204). In his career on the Hilltop, Howard has 24 wins which is eighth most in program history and with two wins he would tie Chris Devin '98 for seventh on the list. Howard currently sits in fourth in program history with a career save percentage of 0.907.
  • The Hawks are operating on the power play at 15.2%, netting five goals in 31 chances. The Saint Anselm penalty kill has allowed six goals in 45 times shorthanded, good for an 86.7% kill percentage.
SCOUTING BUFFALO STATE
  • Connor Bizal leads the Bengals with nine points, coming from one goal and a team-high eight assists. Bizal is tied for the SUNYAC lead with nine points and leads in assists.
  • Nikita Kozyrev and Tyler Vanuden are tied for second on the team with seven points each. Kozyrev leads the team and is tied for the conference lead with five goals and has added two assists while Vanuden ranks second on the team with four markers.
  • Five Buffalo State student-athletes sit on two goals this season with 17 Bengals registering at least one point this season.
  • Emil Norrman has started all seven games for the Bengals. He owns a 2.29 goals-against average and a 0.945 save percentage with a total of 274 saves. Normann leads the SUNYAC in saves and save percentage while ranking fifth in goals-against average.
  • With the extra skater, the Bengals have netted seven goals in 20 power play chances, good for a 35.0% conversion rate. The team has allowed just two goals in 23 times shorthanded, killing off penalties at 91.3%.
SCOUTING CASTLETON
  • Zach Trempner holds the top spot on the Castleton roster with six points, all coming from assists.
  • Andrew Stefura ranks second on the Spartans with five points. He leads the team with three goals scored and has added two assists.
  • Brandon Picard and Zach Boulet are the lone two student-athletes on the roster outside of Trempner with multiple goals scored.
  • Brandon Collett has started a team-high three games in the 2022-23 season. He is 1-3-0 with a 3.49 goals-against average and a 0.890 save percentage. Dominic Rodrigue has drawn two starts while Josh Ward and Simon Brenter have one each.
  • The Spartans are six-for-40 on the man-advantage, converting at 15.0%. The team's penalty kill is operating at 85.2%, having allowed four goals in 27 times shorthanded.
SCOUTING FRANKLIN PIERCE
  • The NE10's most recent Player of the Week, Connor Foley, leads the conference with 13 points, eight of which have been goals, also a conference-high.
  • Chris Stevenson ranks second on the team and in the NE10 with 11 points. Stevenson is tied for the conference lead with eight assists.
  • Vito Carlo and Jason Ladzinski are tied with Stevenson for second on the squad with three goals each. Carlo has added five assists to his three goals for eight points while Ladzinski has six points, adding three assists.
  • Kyle Martin has started in all eight games for the Ravens this season. He has a 0.904 save percentage with a 3.52 goals-against average, totaling 265 saves. Martin leads the conference in saves and is fourth in save percentage.
  • Franklin Pierce has netted eight goals on 37 power play chances, good for a 21.6% success rate while the penalty kill sits at 75.8%, allowing eight goals on 33 times shorthanded.
ALL-TIME vs. BUFFALO STATE, CASTLETON, FRANKLIN PIERCE
  • This will be the third meeting all-time between the Hawks and Bengals. In the previous two meetings, which came in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the programs skated to a tie in each contest.
  • If the Hawks and Spartans meet on Saturday, it will be the 22nd in the all-time series. Saint Anselm posted a 3-2 win on Nov. 5, 2021 marking the last contest in the series.
  • Saint Anselm and Franklin Pierce would be battling for the 29th time on Saturday. The Hawks won two-of-three meetings during the 2021-22 season including on Feb. 12, 2022 which was the last time the programs met.
