Women's basketball victorious at Pace, 61-37

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Taking on the reigning NCAA Division II East Region Champions from Pace University, the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team picked up a convincing 61-37 victory over the host Setters on Tuesday.

Using a big 22-0 scoring run in the first half, Saint Anselm improves to 2-3 overall on the season, moving to 1-2 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Pace, compilers of a 24-8 record one season ago and an Elite Eight program, drops to 1-3 overall after its first NE10 fixture.

Since the turn of the century, Saint Anselm has limited an opponent to 37 of fewer points on just eight occasions, most recently keeping Franklin Pierce to just 33 points on Nov. 14, 2018. Only 14 times have the Hawks kept an opponent to 37 or less points at their home venue.

Junior Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) posted 22 points, making eight of her 11 field goals, while adding eight rebounds in just over 30 minutes of game play. Senior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) secured a career-high 11 rebounds, scoring as many points to record the first double-double of her collegiate career.

Freshman Gina Gaccione (Rutherford, N.J.) cashed in with a career-high 11 points in 18 minutes, tallying five rebounds, with junior Alexa Quirolo (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scoring eight points off the bench with two triples to her credit.

Down by an 8-5 margin in the first quarter, the Hawks poured home the game's next 22 points as the team collectively shot 9-for-13 from the floor, including three triples. The hosts, meanwhile, missed all 12 of their shots and turned the ball over five times.

The second quarter saw Pace score just six points as the Hawks took a commanding 36-14 advantage into halftime. In the first 20 minutes alone, Saint Anselm was 15-for-29 from the floor and won the rebounding battle by a decisive 24-to-12 margin.

The Hawks grew their lead to a game-high 31 points with 6:45 to go in regulation time, capping a 7-0 scoring run with a Turco jumper after five points from Quirolo.

Saint Anselm returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 30 for a 5:30 p.m. tilt at Saint Rose.
