MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team fell to American International College by a 2-1 score on Saturday.
The Hawks drop to 6-5-1 on the season and 2-5-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Yellow Jackets improve to 5-3-3 overall and 3-3-3 in conference play. Saint Anselm heads to Assumption University on Wednesday, Oct. 12 for a 7 p.m. opening kickoff.
Sophomore
Riley DiGilio (Danvers, Mass.) made her season debut and netted her first goal of the season in the match while classmate
Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) and junior
Olivia Gotobed (North Andover, Mass.) registering assists on the goal.
Caroline Porter gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Porter collected a through ball from
Cameron Wilbur and managed to sneak through the Hawks back line and beat freshman goalkeeper
Emma Hudson (Kingston, Mass.) with a shot that bounced off the right post and into the back of the net.
The Hawks responded with a goal in the 12th minute as Gotobed drove to the right corner and found Pecor on a cross who headed a shot off the crossbar. However, DiGilio was in the right place at the right time to clean up the rebound chance and tie the match at one.
Leya Vohra netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute as she collected a loose ball in the box and chipped a shot into the left side of the goal which gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 lead.
Senior
Kathryn White (Georgetown, Mass.) fired five shots in the match while DiGilio led the match with two shots on frame.
Saint Anselm held a 23-9 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. American International had five corner kicks to four for the Hawks.
Hudson made two saves in the losing effort for Saint Anselm while
Avery Lein stopped five shots on target for the Yellow Jackets.
