MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team was doubled up by nationally-ranked Adelphi, 2-1, on Senior Day.
The Hawks, who honored eight members of their class of 2023, move to 6-6-0 on the season and 3-4-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play while the Panthers improve to 6-1-4 overall and 3-1-2 in conference matches. Saint Anselm will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 10 when they travel to Saint Michael's College for a NE10 battle that is set to kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
Seniors
Jonathan Alves (Peabody, Mass.),
Jackson Bukunt (Upton, Mass.),
Michael Fortin (Goffstown, N.H.),
Kevin Jordan (Danvers, Mass.),
Taylor Silverstein (Concord, N.H.),
Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.), and
Kyle White (Danvers, Mass.) and graduate student
Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) were honored in the pregame ceremony.
Adelphi posted the first marker of the match when they sent a bouncing ball into the box which the Hawks defense failed to clear. The ball found its way into the back of the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
Saint Anselm responded with a tally of their own in the 27th minute as Elliot sent a free kick on Panthers goalkeeper
Daniel De La Heras, which he turned aside. However, junior
Ethan Northcott (Hollis, N.H.) collected the rebound and pushed the ball over the goal line to tie the score at one for his first collegiate goal.
Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca sent the ensuing restart on the Saint Anselm goal and managed to beat Underhill in the top right of the goal, needing just two seconds of game time to regain the lead for the Panthers at 2-1.
The Hawks had two strong chances to score in the second half as Bukunt fired a right footed shot on De La Heras which forced him to make a diving save in the 53rd minute before a Silverstein shot attempt from just outside of the Adelphi 18-yard box in the 67th minute, but that chance was turned aside.
Underhill made three saves on five shots on goal in the match while De La Heras turned aside five of six shots on target.
Saint Anselm was awarded six corner kicks to four for Adelphi. The physical match saw the squads combine for 32 fouls.
