MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior
Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) fired a shot into the back of the net at 1:43 of the overtime period, giving the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team a 6-5 win over the University of Southern Maine in non-conference action on Saturday.
With the win, the Hawks move to 2-0-0 on the season while the Huskies open their season with a 0-1-0 record. Saint Anselm returns to Northeast-10 Conference play with a pair of contests on Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5 from the Sports Center of Connecticut against Post University.
Schwartz was one of six goal scorers for the Hawks in the contest. Junior
Will Christensen (Ridgefield, Conn.) netted a goal and added two assists for three points while senior
Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman
Luke Linart (Holland, Mich.) added pair of helpers each in the win.
Senior goaltender
Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) turned aside 29 shots on goal for the Hawks compared to 33 for his counterpart
Mason Palmer. Howard now has 29 career wins which is tied for fourth in program history.
Schwartz forced a turnover at the Hawks defensive blue line and broke away from the pack through the neutral zone. He would fire a snap shot from the top of the slot and into the upper right of the goal for the game-winner, giving Saint Anselm a 6-5 win in overtime.
Earlier in the contest,
Nolan McElhaney had a rebound bounce off him while he was crashing the net. The puck woudl bounce into the goal to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 11:52 of the first period.
Sophomore
Mark Blaney (Braintree, Mass.) drove in from the blue line and fired a wrist shot into the upper half of the goal to tie the contest at one at 1:53 of the second period.
Jakub Suran gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead at 11:48 as he fired a shot from the point that was blocked but the carom found its way into the back of the net.
Christensen redirected a shot from sophomore
Luke Mix (Winchester, Mass.) at 18:01 of the period but a last-minute goal by
Raphael Lajeunesse to maintained the Huskies one-goal lead headed to the third period.
Senior
Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) wasted no time finding the equalizer for Saint Anselm as he netted his second of the season just 20 seconds into the third period, redirecting a shot from Murphy.
A power play goal by
Mathieu Sabourin gave the Huskies their fourth lead of the day as he sent a cross-crease pass from
Curtis Judd into the back of the net, giving Southern Maine a 4-3 lead at 5:05 of the third period.
Another quick trade of scores pushed the score to 5-4 for the Huskies as junior
Liam Lyons (Gloucester, Mass.) one-timed home the Hawks fourth goal of the contest at 9:02 of the stanza but
Tyler Mitchell responded just 36 seconds later for Southern Maine.
Senior
Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) cleaned up a rebound chance in front of Palmer to tie the score at five at 14:15 of the third period, marking the fifth and final tally of the period.
Both squads had four power play chances in the tilt. The Huskies netted one goal with the extra skater while the Hawks were scoreless. Saint Anselm held a 39-34 edge in shots on goal and won 34 of 62 faceoffs in the contest.
Freshman
Will Rosen (Washington, D.C.) made his collegiate debut in the contest.
