MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team opens its 2022-23 season on Friday, Oct. 28 at Southern New Hampshire University from the Ice Den Arena with a 7:30 p.m. opening puck drop.
The Hawks will then make their home opener on Saturday, Oct. 29 against the University of Southern Maine with a 4 p.m. start from Sullivan Arena.

The Hawks were selected second in the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches' poll with two first-place votes and 18 total points. In 2021-22, the Hawks skated to a 13-12-2 record overall and a 10-6-2 record in NE10 play, earning the second seed for the conference postseason. Following the pair of opening tilts, the Hawks will head to Post University on Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5.
The Penmen topped the NE10 Preseason Coaches' poll with 22 points and two first-place votes. Southern New Hampshire skated to the top-seed in the NE10 postseason with a 16-8-0 record and a 14-4-0 mark in conference play. The team travels to Framingham State University on Saturday, Oct. 29.
The Huskies collected 29 points in the New England Hockey Conference Preseason poll which is good for eighth of 10 programs. The team is making its season opener against the Hawks after skating to an 8-14-1 overall record and a 5-10-1 record in conference play in 2021-22. The team opens NEHC play on Friday, Nov. 4 at Elmira College.
HAWKS NOTES
- Saint Anselm returns 20 student-athletes from last season's roster including seniors Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.), Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.), and Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) and junior Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.). Andary and Hayes will serve the team as co-captains while Murphy and Schwartz will be alternate captains to makeup the 2022-23 leadership group.
- The Hawks have added 11 student-athletes, 10 freshmen and one junior, to the roster ahead of the season bringing the total roster size to 31.
- Andary, the reigning NE10 Player of the Year, netted 17 goals and added 19 assists for 36 points last season. His point total was a league-high while his goals and assists were second in the NE10.
- Schwartz and Hayes ranked second and third on the team in points with 25 and 22 each respectively. Schwartz, an All-Rookie Team selection, netted 10 goals and added 15 assists while Hayes posted career-highs in goals (9), assists (13), and points.
- The 2021-22 NE10 Goaltender of the Year, senior Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) returns for the Hawks as well. Howard led the conference with a 2.71 goals-against average and was fifth with a 0.907 save percentage. He turned aside 686 shots on goal which was second most in the conference. In program history, Howard has 27 career wins which is tied for sixth. He needs 10 wins to tie the program record which is held by Tom Gavin '75 and Jim Merola '05.
- In the NE10, the Hawks ranked third in goals scored (85), first in assists (146), first in shots per game (37.1), and in first in goals-against average (2.96).
SCOUTING SOUTHERN N.H.
- The Penmen return 19 student-athletes from last season's roster including George Thurston who led the NE10 with 21 goals and ranked second in the conference with 33 points. Thurston joined Andary and Howard on the All-NE10 First Team.
- The team sits at a roster size of 27, bringing in eight freshmen to round out the roster.
- Matt Amante ranked third on the Penmen last season with 21 points, coming from eight goals and 13 assists.
- Adam Mercer is back for Southern New Hampshire after starting in 15 games last season. He owned a 2.72 goals-against average and 0.922 save percentage, totaling 484 saves in 2021-22.
- The Penmen were second in the NE10 in goals (90), assists (130), shots per game (37.1), goals against (72), and goals-against average (2.72) while leading in goals-per game (3.75), power play goals (37), power play percentage (32.2), and save percentage (0.910).
SCOUTING SOUTHERN MAINE
- The Huskies have a roster size of 29 entering 2022-23, 18 of which are returning from last season's squad.
- Austin Marini led the team with 16 points coming from a team-high eight goals and eight assists. Marini's assists were tied for third on the team.
- Curtis Judd was tied for the Huskies lead with 10 assists while ranking second on the squad with 14 points, adding four goals to his 10 helpers.
- Kyle Penton and Mason Palmer started in six games each in 2021-22. Palmer turned in a 3.43 goals-against average and a 0.911 save percentage while Penton led the squad with a 3.38 goals-against and a 0.906 save percentage.
- Nick Ritmo, Judd, and Zach Desmarais make up the Huskies leadership group this season with Ritmo serving as the captain while Judd and Desmarais as alternate captains.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN N.H., SOUTHERN MAINE
- The Hawks and Penmen are meeting for the 51st time in the all-time series. Saint Anselm enjoys a 38-11-1 record against Southern New Hampshire in men's ice hockey.
- The Penmen took two of three tilts last season including the regular season finale on Feb. 19, 2022 by a 3-2 score in overtime. The Hawks grabbed a 2-1 win, also in overtime, on Feb. 18, 2022, marking their most recent win in the series.
- Saint Anselm and Southern Maine are battling for the 34th time on Saturday. The Hawks are 17-11-5 against the Huskies all-time.
- Southern Maine posted a 6-4 win in last season's meeting on Dec. 10, 2021.
