PREVIEW: Volleyball meets crosstown rival Southern N.H. in NE10 play

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College volleyball team, who are winners in seven of their last eight matches, head to crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University for their last road match of the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

The Hawks improved to 18-7 overall and 7-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play after posting a 2-1 record in three matches last week. The team posted wins over the Penmen in non-conference play and then snapped an 18-match winning streak from American International College before falling to Adelphi University to conclude the week. The Hawks will be off until Friday, Nov. 4 when they host the University of New Haven before wrapping up the regular season the following day against Southern Connecticut State University.

The Penmen had their five-match winning streak snapped by the Hawks on Oct. 18 before dropping its NE10 match to American International in straight sets. Southern New Hampshire is now 11-5 on the season with a 5-2 mark in conference matches. After hosting Saint Anselm, the Penmen head to Adelphi and Pace University on Saturday, Oct. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 30.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Senior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) was named the NE10 Player of the Week on Monday after posting 37 kills on 136 total attacks with two double-doubles in the three-match week.
  • Casey is averaging 3.22 kills per set with a total of 264 kills, which rank sixth and second in the NE10. Junior Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) and sophomore Gabby Belcher (Buckeye, Ariz.) have recorded 194 and 186 kills each.
  • Senior Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) ranks third in the conference with 711 assists in 2022. She is averaging 8.89 assists per set which is fourth in the league. Henwood also leads Saint Anselm with 36 service aces this season, ranking fifth in the NE10.
  • The Hawks hold the top spot in the conference with 214 service aces, averaging 2.43 per set. Compared to the rest of NCAA Division II, Saint Anselm is eighth in both of those metrics.
  • Senior Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) leads the Saint Anselm defensive efforts with 336 digs, totaling 3.86 digs per set. Belmontez ranks third in the conference in total digs and is fifth all-time in volleyball program history with 1,266 career digs.
  • Junior Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) has 17 solo blocks and 48 assisted blocks for a team-high 65.0 blocks in 2022. She ranks sixth in the conference in total blocks. Wetjen also has the second-highest hitting percentage in the NE10 at 0.379.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • Ana Pimenta leads the Penmen offense with 188 kills, averaging 3.36 kills per set. Pimenta is third in the conference in kills per set.
  • Sara Montefameglio has a team-high 344 assists in the transition game, which is good for an 8.00 assists per set ratio. Ainsley Knox has 265 assists to rank second for Southern New Hampshire.
  • Montefameglio and Deanne Wilson are tied for the top spot on the roster with 25 service aces each. Montefameglio is second in the conference with a 0.58 service aces per set ratio.
  • Wilson leads the Penmen defense with 264 digs, averaging the third highest digs per set at 4.47. Pimenta is second on the squad with 148 total digs.
  • Alice Arletti has 34.0 blocks on the season, which is a team-high. She has five solo blocks and 29 assisted.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • The teams are meeting for the 60th time overall and second time this season. With the Hawks win on Oct. 18, Saint Anselm holds a 30-29 record against Southern New Hampshire all-time.
  • Saint Anselm posted a 3-1 win in non-conference action earlier this season and have now won 10 of the last 12 meetings between the programs, dating back to the beginning of the 2016 season.
