PREVIEW: Women's ice hockey hosts LIU in weekend NEWHA series

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team hosts Long Island University in a pair of New England Women's Hockey Alliance contests from Sullivan Arena on Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22.

The Hawks netted seven goals in a shutout win over Sacred Heart University on Oct. 15. With the win, Saint Anselm moves to 1-6-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in league play. After the weekend series with the Sharks, the Hawks will travel to Sacred Heart on Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29 to conclude the four-game season series from Shelton, Conn.

The Sharks posted a 1-0 win over the University of Maine on Oct. 15 to move to 2-5-0 on the season. Prior to the two-game set with Maine, LIU posted a win over Sacred Heart to open NEWHA play at 1-0-0. After coming to the Hilltop, the Sharks play a home-and-home series with Post University on Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Freshman Brooklyn Pancoast (Helena, Mont.) netted three goals in the series with Sacred Heart including the first of her collegiate career and was rewarded with the NEWHA Player of the Week honors. Pancoast leads the Hawks with five points, adding two assists to her goal total.
  • Sophomore Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) is tied with Pancoast for the team lead with three goals on the season. Turner is one of three Saint Anselm student-athletes on four points through seven games.
  • Juniors Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Savannah Popick (South Windsor, Conn.) are tied for the Hawks lead with three assists each. Tulchinsky went for three points on a goal and two assists in the win over Sacred Heart while Popick posted three helpers between the two-game set.
  • Senior Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) totaled 44 saves in the pair of games against Sacred Heart including 20 in the shutout win on Oct. 15. The senior goaltender sits on 1,313 saves as a member of the women's ice hockey program and needs 48 saves to become the program's saves leader which would put her ahead Amy Zappen '12 who made 1.360 saves for the Hawks.
  • On the season, Kelley has a 0.892 save percentage and a 4.84 goals-against average in seven starts. Kelley's 273 saves leads the NEWHA.
  • Saint Anselm is averaging 2.1 goals per game which is third best in the NEWHA. The Hawks lead the league in power play chances with 28.
SCOUTING LIU
  • Bri Eid and Mikayla Lantto are tied for the Sharks lead with two goals each while seven student-athletes have lit the lamp once this season.
  • Carrigan Umpherville is one of those student-athletes and is tied for the team lead with two assists, bringing her points total to a team-high three.
  • Abby Latorella, Mary Rachel Leanaeus, and Jeannie Wallner join Umpherville with two assists through seven games.
  • Tindra Holm has started six games for the Sharks and owns a 0.940 save percentage and a 3.20 goals-against average. She ranks second in the league with 264 saves and in save percentage.
  • The Sharks are averaging 1.6 goals per game, having netted 11 on the season. They have had 20 power play opportunities.
ALL-TIME vs. LIU
  • The Hawks and Sharks are meeting for the 11th and 12th times in the all-time series. Saint Anselm holds a 5-4-1 record over LIU.
  • The last time the program's met was on Mar. 4, 2022 in the NEWHA Semifinals from Winchendon, Mass. which went to the Hawks by a 3-1 score. With the win, Saint Anselm advanced to its fourth consecutive NEWHA Championship game.
  • During the regular season, the Sharks posted a 2-1-1 record in the four-game series against the Hawks. Two of the four tilts went to overtime including on Nov. 21, 2021 which was a 3-2 win for LIU in East Meadow, N.Y. and a 1-1 tie on Jan. 14, 2022.
