Women's tennis falls in NE10 First Round action at Le Moyne

DEWITT, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team came up short in the First Round of the 2022 Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Wednesday, falling to Le Moyne by a 4-0 score at Elevate Fitness.

Saint Anselm had earned a spot in the six-team NE10 championship for the first time since the 2010-11 season and entered as the No. 6 seed. Despite a spirited effort from the Hawks in both doubles and singles, the host Dolphins, seeded No. 3, would prevail in the indoor match.

Le Moyne jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles portion of action. Senior Anastasia Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine) and freshman Matilda Briegel (Tutzing, Bavaria, Germany) were defeated 6-2 at the No. 2 position and the No. 3 team of sophomore Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Camila Heredia Osante (Oaxaca, Mexico) was edged by a 6-4 final score.

The No. 1 doubles contest went unfinished (down 5-3) after the Dolphins secured the doubles point.

In singles play, the Dolphins were successful at No. 2 and No. 4 singles by posting straight-set wins over Kapothanasis and Heredia Osante to earn a 3-0 lead, meaning Saint Anselm would need to win all four matches still in play.

Garbo and Parzick engaged in tenacious battles at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, with Garbo losing 7-5 before rallying to win her second set, 6-4, to force a third. Parzick's play was outstanding, featuring a back-and-forth first set clash that went the Dolphins way 7-6 (3) in a tiebreaker. Parzick would fall short 6-1 in the second set, a victory that clinched the overall dual match for Le Moyne.

Garbo's third set, as well as the matches at No. 5 singles (Briegel) and No. 6 singles (Abigail Svor) went unfinished.

As a team, Saint Anselm won eight more games than the squad managed during their regular season contest at Le Moyne on Sunday, Oct. 2, even though three of the singles matches were not completed on Wednesday due to the championship format.
