SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team came away with a thrilling 2-1 victory over American International College on Saturday, scoring the winner with 68 seconds left in the game.
In hot pursuit of its first Northeast-10 Conference postseason appearance since 2009, Saint Anselm evens its overall record at 7-7 while moving to 4-5 against Northeast-10 Conference foes. American International falls to 2-6-5 overall (1-4-3 NE10).
Sophomore Jonas Walter (Marburg, Germany) scored both goals for Saint Anselm, including the game-winner just over one minute left in regulation time. Off a corner, the ball found its way to Walter near the left post following a great header from junior Ethan Northcott (Hollis, N.H.).
In the game's 27th minute, Walter's first goal put the Hawks ahead by a 1-0 margin. Junior Zach Verow (Bedford, N.H.) made a nice run up the left side, got around a defender, and crashed the left post. He was able to slide the ball to a crashing Walter for the goal.
AIC tied the game at 58:28 as Christian Amaral was able to beat senior Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) and score the equalizer.
