PREVIEW: Women's basketball meets Saint Rose in NE10 action

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team heads to The College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday, Jan. 25.

The Hawks were tripped up by Le Moyne College on Saturday, Jan. 22 falling by a 67-63 score. The Hawks are now 9-7 on the season with a 5-4 mark against conference opponents. Saint Anselm remains on the road as the team travels to Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday, Jan. 29 which marks its last contest of the month of January.

The Golden Knights dropped their last contest on Saturday, Jan. 22 to Southern New Hampshire University, 57-41. Saint Rose falls to 3-8 overall and 2-5 in NE10 play. The team heads to Assumption University on Thursday, Jan. 27 before heading to Stonehill College on Saturday, Jan. 29 to close the month.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
  • Senior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) and sophomore Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) led the Hawks offense with 17 points each wile sophomore Alexa Quirolo (New Rochelle, N.Y.) chipped in 11 points on three-of-seven shooting from beyond the arc.
  • Steinman is averaging 20.1 points per game which ranks second in the NE10 and is 16th best in all of NCAA Division II. The senior ranks sixth nationally in free throws made with 90, which also leads the conference. She has scored in double figures in all but one game this season.
  • Turco was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Monday for the fifth time this season. In last week's action, Turco netted 22 points in the win over New Haven on Jan. 19 and added 17 points on Saturday. She is averaging 16.4 points per game which second on the team and seventh in the NE10.
  • Since Jan. 11, Quirolo has seen an uptick in playing time and has made the most of the opportunity. The sophomore has posted double-digit point totals since the win over American International, a four-game stretch, and scored a career-high 16 points against New Haven.
  • After draining 14 free throws in each of the Hawks' previous three games, Saint Anselm managed to take six shots from the free throw line in the team's last game. It is the third time this season that they have not attempted at least 10 shots from the charity stripe. The team sits in second in the NE10 in free throw percentage at 81.0% but leads the conference in makes with 221 as a team.
SCOUTING SAINT ROSE
  • The Golden Knights have played just two games since their one-point win over Saint Michael's on Dec. 18. Since then, three games have been postponed and in its return to action on Jan. 19, Saint Rose fell to Bentley before dropping a game to the Penmen on Jan. 22 by a 57-41 score.
  • Nina Fedullo netted a team-high 10 points and grabbed eight boards for the Golden Knights. Fedullo leads Saint Rose with an average of 10.2 points per game and averages a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game, which is tied for 10th in the conference. She is also averaging 1.6 blocks per game which is tied for fourth in the conference.
  • Becca Townes follows Fedullo closely, averaging 9.5 points per game. Townes chipped in eight points against Southern New Hampshire, snapping a three-game streak of double digit scoring. Townes ranks in the top-10 in the NE10 in assists per game (3.3) and leads the conference in steals per game (2.5).
  • Head coach Whitney Edwards is in her second season at the helm of the Golden Knights women's basketball program. The team played seven contests during the 2020-21 academic year, posting an 0-7 record.
  • The Golden Knights currently sit in sixth in the conference's Southwest Division after being projected to finish in seventh in the division in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll.
ALL-TIME vs. SAINT ROSE
  • This will be the 29th meeting between the two programs as the Golden Knights currently hold a 17-11 advantage in the all-time series.
  • The Hawks captured a 67-56 win in the last meeting on Jan. 30, 2019. Going back to the 2011-12 season the Hawks are 6-3 against the Golden Knights.
  • Saint Rose holds the longest win streak in the all-time series, eight games, dating from Jan. 9, 2007 to Jan. 3, 2012.
