MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team locked down an 81-67 victory over visiting Le Moyne College on Saturday in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Saint Anselm has now won five games in a row, moving to 10-4 overall on the season and to 6-3 against league opponents. Le Moyne drops to 8-6 on the year and to 4-3 versus Northeast-10 Conference competition.
With the score tied at 63 with under six minutes left, the Hawks unleashed an 18-4 scoring run that stunned the visiting Dolphins. The Hawks were a combined five-for-seven from the floor in that span and made seven of their nine free throw attempts, locking down the victory in convincing fashion.
Senior Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.) matched a season-high figure with 29 points, making 11 of his field goal attempts, and converted on seven free throws in the win. He scored 18 of those 29 points in the second half, where he went six-for-seven.
Junior Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) was second on the squad with 12 points and classmate Owen McGlashan (Marlton, N.J.) had 11 points and a team-best three steals for Saint Anselm. Senior Gustav Suhr-Jessen (Virum, Denmark) scored 10 points for the Hawks and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Saint Anselm led throughout the majority of the first half, but the Dolphins kept things interesting. A dunk by the Dolphins with under 10 minutes to go in the opening stanza trimmed the Saint Anselm lea to 20-17, but the Hawks responded with a 12-4 scoring run that was fueled by eight points from sophomore Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.).
Le Moyne crawled back into the game with eight consecutive points down the stretch, bringing the Hawks lead to three points, 32-29, with 1:12 left. The Hawks were able to fire off four of the first half's final six points to establish a 36-31 lead at the break.
Two quick baskets for the Dolphins to start the second half made it a one point game, but the Hawks pulled away with 13 of the game's next 18 points and created a 49-40 lead with 13:50 to go. Le Moyne would not lead throughout the rest of the game, despite tying the score four times.
The decisive blow for Saint Anselm was the tie-breaking run of 14 points by the hosts, fueled by eight points from Paul and six points from Arbuckle. Le Moyne was 0-for-3 from the floor and turned the ball over four times in the nearly four-minute timeframe.
As a team, Saint Anselm was 30-for-59 from the floor (50.8%) and held statistical advantages in paint points (48-to-30) as well as points off turnovers (19-to-10).
Six of the next seven games for the Hawks will be played on the road, starting with Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. contest at Saint Rose.
