Men's ice hockey turned away by LIU, 8-1

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team fell to Long Island University on Friday evening by an 8-1 margin.

Saint Anselm drops to 6-8-1 overall on the year while LIU, in its first season of NCAA Division I men's ice hockey, ups its record to 5-14-3. The two teams will meet again on Long Island at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Freshman Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) scored his second goal of the season at the 7:31 mark of the second period, cutting the LIU lead to 3-1. The Sharks responded just 11 seconds later, scoring their fourth goal of the game – the hosts tacked on four more goals to create the final 8-1 score.

LIU outshot Saint Anselm by a 48-19 margin and saw 18 members of its lineup log at least one point in the victory. Tyler Welsh led the Sharks with a goal and two assists for three points (1-2=3).

Junior Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) finished the day with 30 saves on 37 shots before yielding to freshman Trevor Lally (Arlington, Mass.), who made 11 stops on 12 chances in his collegiate debut.

Junior Mark Leach (Londonderry, N.H.) led the way for the Hawks with three blocked shots on defense.

Two LIU backstops combined for 18 saves on 19 shots.
