Men's ice hockey falls to LIU in non-conference finale

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey fell to Long Island University by a 7-0 score in the team's non-conference finale on Saturday.

The Hawks fall to 6-9-1 on the season while the Sharks improve to 6-14-3. Saint Anselm returns home for the first time since Nov. 23, marking a stretch of 12 scheduled games, on Friday, Jan. 28 when Saint Michael's College comes to the Hilltop for Pink in the Rink weekend.

Saint Anselm opened the contest on the attack, sending six shots toward goal in the opening 3:32. Three of the attempts went wide of the goal while two were stopped by the LIU goaltender Kris Carlson.

Jake Stevens got the Sharks on the board which would push all momentum to LIU when he fired a shot by Hawks freshman netminder Trevor Lally (Arlington, Mass.) just 5:56 into the contest. Billy Jerry would double the lead when he redirected a shot from Nolan McElhaney less than three minutes later, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead.

LIU would net two more goals in the first period as Daine Du Bois and Derek Osik combined to give the Sharks a 4-0 lead headed into the first intermission.

McElhaney and Zach Nazzarett poured in two more goals in the second period which would give LIU a 6-0 lead. Lally managed to stop 25 of 31 shots on goal for the Hawks through 40 minutes of play.

The Hawks had a strong chance to crack to the scoreboard in the opening minutes of the third period as freshman Luke Mix (Winchester, Mass.) collected a pass in a two-on-one with junior alternate captain Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.). Andary found Mix who crashed the net but the shot attempt was saved by Carlson.

The Sharks added a tally in the final stanza which pushed their lead to 7-0.

Lally, making his first collegiate start, stopped 33 shots on goal. Carlson posted a 27-save shutout, earning the win.
