Men's ice hockey shuts out Post, 4-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team capped a weekend sweep of Post University on Saturday, downing the Eagles by a 4-0 score.

The Hawks improve to 6-7-1 on the season and 3-4-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Eagles fall to 5-9-0 overall and 3-4-0 against the league. Saint Anselm heads to Long Island University on Friday, Jan. 21 and Saturday, Jan. 22 for its final non-conference contests of the season.

Junior Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) extended his point streak to six games with two goals and two assists for four points. Sophomores Will Christensen (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) netted the other two Hawks goals and recorded one assist each while seniors Kevin Ouellette (Arlington, Mass.) and Sean Healy (Quincy, Mass.) recorded one helper each in the win.

Andary opened the scoring at 10:19 of the opening period. The junior won a defensive zone faceoff to Healy who sent a pass to Andary in the neutral zone. Andary and Schwartz drove into the attacking zone in a two-on-one. The alternate captain held his shot and used the defender as a screen, firing a wrister by Eagles goaltender Brandon Blodgett.

Christensen doubled the Hawks lead in the first minute of the second stanza when he cleaned up a rebound on a shot attempt by Andary. That is the fourth goal of the season for Christensen.

Later in the second period, the junior alternate captain netted his fifth goal of the weekend series with Schwartz recording an assist on the play.

Schwartz managed to slide home a goal of his own after Andary sent a cross-ice pass for the sophomore. He put a shot on Blodgett who made a sliding save but Schwartz managed to lift the rebound chance over the goaltender and into the back of the net to push the score to 4-0 at 13:21 of the final period.

The Hawks fired 23 shots on goal in the contest compared to 32 for the Eagles. Saint Anselm netted one goal in three power play chances while the Eagles were scoreless in their three opportunities.

Junior goaltender Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) posted a 32-save shutout, grabbing his sixth win of the season. He made 18 saves in the third period alone to preserve the clean sheet. Blodgett suffers his first loss of the season after making 19 saves in the contest.
