GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team scored its third consecutive win and fifth win in the last six contests on Saturday, downing regionally-ranked Adelphi University, 74-65.
The Hawks improve to 8-4 overall and 4-3 against Northeast-10 Conference foes. The Panthers fall to 10-5 on the season with a 5-3 mark in league contests. Saint Anselm hosts New Haven on Wednesday, Jan. 19 with the opening tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
Saint Anselm's balanced scoring attack was led by senior
Chris Paul (Highland Mills, N.Y.) who had 19 points while junior
Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) netted 18 points and senior
Gustav Suhr-Jessen (Virum, Denmark) canned 17 points. Arbuckle and sophomore
Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) led the Hawks with six boards each. Arbuckle led Saint Anselm with five assists.
Adelphi grabbed an early 10-4 lead on a layup by
Adonis Williams and after some swapping of scores, the Hawks tied the score at 12 with 9:53 left in the first half following a jumper by Paul.
Five lead changes ensued over the next six-plus minutes until Suhr-Jessen drained a three, giving the Hawks a 25-22 lead with 3:38 remaining until the break. The score capped eight consecutive points by the Hawks who took a six-point lead at 33-27 into the half as Williams netted a jumper in the final seconds.
Coming out the break, the Panthers would score six consecutive points on a pair of jump shots by
Ronnie Silva and a layup by Williams to knot the score at 33.
With 15:03 left in regulation, Arbuckle got a jump shot to fall, giving Saint Anselm a 38-36 advantage. Adelphi would keep its deficit to one possession until Becker netted a jumper which gave the Hawks a five-point lead with 10:01 to go. A layup by senior
Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) established a seven-point advantage for the Hawks, but seven consecutive points by Adelphi tied the score at 50 with 8:22 remaining.
Saint Anselm would use a 10-point run to take control of the contest as Suhr-Jessen, Arbuckle, and Paul all found scores in the stretch that gave the Hawks a 60-50 lead with 5:39 left in regulation.
With 45 seconds left in the second half, Silva sunk a triple which cut the Hawks lead to five, but with the time left Saint Anselm would hold on to take a 74-65 win.
